Openings: Good Samaritan’s @ Copro Nason

On a night packed full of openings – artists, gallery patrons, and AM converged on Santa Monica’s Bergamot Station for Copro Nason’s latest group show, “Good Samaritan’s.” The show features pieces from over 40 artists and includes AM favorites such as: Brian M. Riverside native Jeff Soto returned to his roots last night for his first museum show entitled “Turning in Circles” (previewed). On a chilly night in Los Angeles, The Date Farmers and DJ Alf Alpha kept things muy caliente at New Image Art with their latest body of work, “Tell Them Willy Boy Was Here,” in the main space and, “The Cat House,” in the gallery’s project room. Working with a mixture of found materials, from Cracker Jack boxes, flattened coffee cans, to discarded signs, these items present a beautifully raw and unrefined canvas for The Date Farmers’ special touch of paint and mixed media objects. Headed out to Palm Springs last night to attend the opening of Matt Dangler’s “Out From the Whirlwind” (previewed) and Yumiko Kayukawa’s “The Last 34” (previewed).Â Matt’s paintings looked to be getting more detailed with this body of work.Â He also spent time explaining some of the symbolism and geometry behind each piece leaving us impressed with the amount of planning and thought he gave to each painting.Â Yumiko’s show highlighted many of the endangered species around the world including polar bears, elephants and leopards.Â […]

The Date Farmers return to the gallery where it all started to introduce their latest body of work, “Tell Them Willy Boy Was Here,” which opens tonight at New Image Art from 7-10 pm. Openings: Mostly Memory @ Thinkspace Gallery

AM kicked off a weekend loaded with great shows by attending the opening of Mostly Memory at Thinkspace (previewed here and here) featuring the work of street artists Armsrock and Elbow-Toe. Gallery patrons were abuzz over the depth, significance, and aura of insight found within the series of works presented by both artists. Release Party: Yoskay Yamamoto’s Koibito

Last night, we stopped by Munky King on Melrose to attend the release party for Yoskay Yamamoto’s (interviewed) Koibito figure. There were two colorways – gold and black (edition of 500) and a Munky King exclusive translucent-smoke colorway (edition of 150) – both seen below. There was also a raffle (one ticket per purchase) for an original painting and other prizes!Â Also for sale were various prints and custom koibitos… More after the jump.

Ayako Rokkaku @ Scope Miami

Over at Basel Week Miami, there were hundreds if not thousands of artists that were represented at the various art fairs. Ayako Rokkaku was one that caught AM’s eye and we did a little more digging for you. Similar to another rising Japanese arist: Masakatsu Sashie (here), Ayako also got her start at Takashi Murakami’s Geisai art fair where she won Scout Prize at Geisai #4/#10Â and the prestigious Akio Goto Prize at Geisai #9.
