Openings: Gary Baseman – “La Noche de la Fusion”

Corey Helford Gallery held a very special collector’s preview of Gary Baseman’s latest exhibition “La Noche de la Fusion.” The amazing “Enlightened Chou” installation was more impressive, once assembled, than when we previewed it in our studio visit. The installation is comprised of many Chous, each one is from a different country: Thailand, India, Mexico, Brazil, Russia. Releases: Naoto Hattori Mini-Paintings

If you took our earlier suggestion to add yourself to Naoto Hattori’s mailing list, you would have seen this painting in the recent batch of mini-paintings he released.  Although Hattori is usually recognized for his paintings of psychedelic influenced figments of his imagination, there is a softer side to his work – hauntingly beautiful females often painted in this statuesque texture. Preview: “Octo Pusses” Group Show & Bast – “Horse Radish” @ New Image Art

New Image Art opens their “Octo Pusses” group exhibition this Saturday, May 2nd. The show includes a nice variety of up-and-comers and established names, featuring the work of Aaron Johnson, Antonio Diaz, Ben Jones, Cleon Peterson, Gino Perez, Judith Supine (studio visit) and Neck Face. Taking over the gallery’s project room with “Horse Radish” is Bast (studio visit), who makes his return to the gallery with a series based on horse jockey collages. The most striking, inherent fallacy of street art displayed in a gallery setting is undoubtably the loss of contextual reference for both the viewer and the artist.
