Openings: Blaine Fontana – “The Golden Record” @ Lebasse Projects

In what sounds like an eternity in the fast-moving and evolving world of contemporary art, Blaine Fontana has just opened his first gallery exhibition in 3 years.  He returns with a tightly constructed, cohesive body of work with a unified theme.  The solo exhibition at LeBasse Projects in Culver City features 13 paintings, using acrylic and almost entirely on board, all intricately and exquisitely rendered by the Otis graduate. More, including images of the entire show, after the jump…

Setup / Preview: Faile Bast Deluxx Fluxx Arcade – NYC edition

Some of you may have heard rumblings about an upcoming Faile x Bast show coming to NYC.  We can finally confirm that it’s true.  Even better is that it’s a pop up show in the Lower East Side (LES) of the Big Apple.  Faile and Bast’s recent arcade show at London’s Lazarides (Rathbone Place) was so unique and popular that it got many US fans in a state of envy.  Originally conceived as a one-off show, Faile and Bast decided to create a brand new […]

Interviews: SABER

Known as one of the best graffiti writers of all-time, SABER can also be described as a pioneer, legend, hero, Guinness World Records holder, and activist. Most of all though, he is an artist. An artist in the true sense of the word. One with keen and insightful observations and expressions of the world he lives in, the beauty that surrounds him, and the injustices that affect him. He has dedicated his entire adult life to the work he believes in, often at great risk […]

Openings: Herbert Baglione – “Last Chance for a Slow Dance” @ Iguapop Gallery

Herbert Baglione’s solo at the Iguapop Gallery in Spain opened last weekend with a series of new paintings, wall murals, and installations. We heard much from one of our favorite Brazilian artists since his show in SF, but it look as though “Last Chance for a Slow Dance” is another beautiful body of work with a cooler and more muted pallette. More images after the jump…

Setup: Shepard Fairey Mural – “These Parties Disgust Me” for Deitch Projects

AM was on hand to document the creation of Shepard Fairey’s (featured) latest outdoor project on the mural space hosted by Deitch Projects at the corner of Manhattan’s prime Houston & Bowery Street. As teased, the final product was true to the preview image which we first released. Armed with cans of spray paint, vats of wheat paste and a few “cherry pickers”, the Obey crew (Dan, Nick and Zee) braved the unexpected downpours to build this tremendous new mural. Check out our full coverage of their progress after the […]

Teaser: Kukula – “Sugar and Blood” @ Dorothy Circus Gallery

Kukula is prepping for an upcoming show at Rome’s Dorothy Circus Gallery entitled “Sugar and Blood”, which opens on June 17th. Not since her last show “Immortal Artifacts” (previewed) have we seen her in a solo. For now, nibble on this little teaser… Discuss Kukula here.

Openings: “We Ride at Night” @ Gallery Heist

Following the dual shows at White Walls and Shooting Gallery earlier this month, we took a short trip down the street to Gallery Heist, the newest art offering in San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood. Co-curated by Jason Vivona (studio visit), “We Ride at Night” is a group of talented artists, skaters, bike riders, punks, musicians and all around awesome folks who have banded together to put on shows and release limited edition items throughout the greater Bay Area. Consisting of a healthy blend of media, WRaN’s […]

Streets: Banksy in San Francisco (Part III)

Sir Banksy is on a tear in SF as we round up 6 different spots which he banged out in the past few days. As we see two which we already covered (Part I & Part II), what’s cool is our friends from Warholian did a little hometown research and plotted the exact addresses of each piece. So if you’re lucky enough to be near the Bay area, you should get your GPS out and do a little urban sight seeing. (While they lasts…) See pics of each one […]

Overtime: April 18-24

We are starting to dig Best Ever’s work. Is there such a thing as a cheap Banksy Print?  Yes! David Choe gives an interesting NSFW interview. A May Day flag print from Shepard Fairey, a May Day package from the Ace Hotel, and for those with more means, the original HPM. Graffiti vending machines – A doomed business idea or hoax? An interview with Joe Sorren. A look at Gary Baseman’s and John Casey’s studios. Roa goes big in London. A beautiful video from JR […]

Openings – New Directions @ White Walls

Opening alongside “Meticulous Engagements” at the Shooting Gallery was White Walls’ “New Directions” a group show consisting of five talents that the gallery has been building this past year.  Featuring Mark Warren Jacques (pictured above), Henry Gunderson (interviewed), Akira Beard, Robert Burden, and Cheryl Molnar. New Directions is a look at several distinctly different and unique styles each exploring their own directions. Full photo set after the jump.
