Openings: José Parlá – “Walls, Diaries, and Paintings” @ Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery

Armory Week is a time when many art heavyweights of the art world converge on New York so galleries in the area save some of their best artists/exhibitions just for this occasion. On Thursday night, Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery launched an epic exhibition for one of AM’s favorites, José Parlá. Entitled “Walls, Diaries and Paintings”, the show (previewed) filled the entire gallery space with José’s calligraphic style. Utilizing the techniques and reference photos which he has accumulated over the years on his travels, Parlá created a collection of beautifully crafted canvases and wood pieces. Not shy to get back to his urban roots, he even took two weeks to install a street replica along the long corridors of the gallery – bringing the streets indoors. So intricate was his thought process, José even installed a working street phone with a pre-recorded voice to interact with. This amazing exhibition lasts until April 16th, so make plans to stop by if you’re in the area.
