Ed Ruscha – “Psycho Spaghetti Westerns” @ Gagosian Gallery, Beverly Hills

We previously posted a video of the Ed Ruscha exhibition currently on view at Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills, but we felt this landmark show deserved much better than that on AM.  Here are actual still images of the paintings by the legendary Los Angeles artist.  Psycho Spaghetti Westerns contains Ruscha’s examination of the “effects of time on landscape” and is his first solo show in his hometown in twelve years.  It is up until April 9, so if you have a chance to see […]

Ai Weiwei MIA in Wake of Plans to Establish Satellite Studio in Berlin

Less than a week after his announcement to set up a studio in Berlin, China’s most well known artist and activist Ai WeiWei has effectively gone missing, with the clock now well past 36 hours without communication and French and German leaders calling for his release. Long an outspoken thorn in the side of the Chinese Government, with the plug being pulled on his massive retrospective by the Chinese gallery for being “too politically sensitive” as the most recent attempt to quell his voice, Mr. […]

Openings: Lucas Price – ‘The Friends of Tony Romanoff’ @ Pure Evil Gallery

It was said that The Friends of Tony Romanoff was to be curated by Lucas Price, but the intriguing press release we read for this show was so ambiguous that AM didn’t quite know what to expect. The exhibition, which opened last Thursday, as we kind of expected, turned out to be a collection of new work authored solely by Lucas. Pure Evil Gallery played host to the exhibition, which was a refreshing change to see Lucas’ more contemporary side emerging, based around mixed media […]

Preview: KMNDZ – “The Heaviest” @ Fifty24SF

Look at these stacks of goodness getting ready to be shipped up North to San Francisco for a show opening on Thursday night, April 7th, at Fifty24SF. Johnny Rodriguez, or better known as KMNDZ, will be presenting his new body of work “The Heaviest” featuring some familiar imagery including chains, robots, bombs, and skulls, all done up in his special patina.  It will be a busy night for art as we will be attending the Josh Keyes opening as well.  See you all there! More […]

Openings: Agnès B – Howard St. “Galerie Boutique” Launch & Exhibition

Last week AM attended dual receptions to celebrate the launch of Agnès B’s Howard St. flagship store  in New York’s SoHo district. The dazzling concept space will be known as  “Galerie Boutique” which also serves as a gallery to exhibit some of legendary designer’s favorite artists. The launch events took place over two nights and drew numerous notables from the fashion and art scene. A long time patron of the arts, Agnès has supported many of the artists we’ve all come to love and this inaugural […]

Teaser: “Tiny Trifecta” @ Cotton Candy Machine

New York art collectors who operate on a budget, take note of a show this Saturday night at the Cotton Candy Machine. The Tara McPherson boutique and gallery space will be holding a grand openings exhibition featuring 100 artists with works for $100 on the 100th day of the year.  You can see the full list of participants after the jump, but there definitely will be pieces from many of our favorite artists in including these Audrey Kawasaki cutouts seen above.

Studio Visits: D*Face

D*Face is currently putting the final touches to a whole new body of work for his US West Coast debut solo show Going Nowhere Fast opening on April 9th at Corey Helford Gallery’s Culver City spot. AM has been anticipating what Face would come up with for this show, as he always turns up the heat for solo exhibitions and brings in new themes. We went along to his studio recently to see how the work was coming together and grabbed a few shots of […]

Previews: Judith Supine – ‘Ladyboy’ @ New Image Art

Ladyboy, a solo exhibition by collagist Judith Supine, opens at New Image Art in West Hollywood on Wednesday, 13 April. It’s already been three years since the 2008 Dirt Mansion installation — the artist’s first solo effort at English Kills Art Gallery in Brooklyn. Wooster Collective described the show as their favourite of the year and AM can separately confirm that, quite frankly, it rocked. With Ladyboy, we’ve been promised another real spectacle including giant woodcut sculptures measuring up to 14-feet high. It sounds like […]

Video / Teaser: Kehinde Wiley – “The World Stage: Israel” @ Roberts & Tilton

In the latest installment of Kehinde Wiley’s The World Stage series, the first since showing his India-Sri Lanka collection last year with Rhona Hoffman Gallery, some of which were exhibited at the gallery’s booth during Art Basel Miami, the New York-based artist has trained his provocative sights on Israel for his newest body of work. Opening Saturday, April 9th at Roberts & Tilton, the Los Angeles site of The World Stage: Brazil back in 2009, The World Stage: Israel will incorporate the historically rich and […]
