A couple Fridays ago, Ken Garduno presented new body of work at the LeBasse Projects Chinatown location. Named Golden Structure, the exhibition exemplifies the artist’s technique with watered down acrylic paintings and his thematic explorations that revolve around the relationships between men and women. Using jealousy and sexual motifs as the catalyst, Garduno manages to present these troubled and tense relationships in a very unique way which features a combination of 1960’s iconography and a color palette that forces the characters to step out of reality. One could call it retro-futuristic but this stylistic choice may simply be more about masking the real emotions hiding underneath layers of color and shadows. Clearly, it appears that Garduno’s interests lean more towards the small nuances of the human expression. The eyes or a slight glare to the side give the viewer a better hint at the real emotions hiding underneath. These small details is what gives the overall work a great balance between a unique artistic style and a human connection at the core.
