This past weekend, Chris Johanson opened his massive retrospective at Malmö Konsthall in Sweden. Organized by Galleri Nicolai Wallner, Alright Alright (previewed) presents an extensive collection of large scale paintings, smaller works on paper, and mixed-media sculptures from the Portland-based artist, collectively exploring such existential issues as “self-delusion, alienation, deceit, and monotony”. The installation of the work was particular unique, displayed on rustic easels within the open layout of the venue for attendees to weave in and out of and interact with on a more intimate level. The whimsical interplay between Johanson’s raunchy wit and free-form style is amplified through a series of comic-like portraiture and abstract expressionism. Running through November 27th, the exhibition spotlights the diverse musings and significance of one of the more successful Mission School artists.
