Wrapping up the third and final part (see Part I and Part II) of our look at Ai Weiwei’s comprehensive retrospective at the Taipei Fine Arts Museum (TFAM), we bring you a robust collection of photographs taken by the artist in the 1980s (split into two periods – New York and Beijing East Village). In the first series of photos, we see the “old New York” from the view point of a fresh Chinese immigrant including the social unrest & riots of the time. The second series exhibited was called the Beijing East Village. In this set of photos we see the young artist returning to Beijing and integrating into an emerging Chinese artistic community, capturing the raw growth of a generation of artists in the epicenter of Chinese art during the communist age.

Check out a deeper look at this collection and a special giveaway after the jump.

As promised in parts I & II of our coverage, we got a special giveaway for the fans of the Chinese artist. The museum created a beautiful comprehensive catalog detailing all the works showcased during this retrospective. We are giving away three copies for the readers of AM. How do you win? Just leave a comment on your favorite piece of work (also choose from here and here) from this retrospective in the section below, on our facebook page, or on our forum by February 10th and we’ll select three winners at random.
