Publications: “Delusional” – The Story of the Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Would you buy art from a guy in a Teletubby outfit? Well, many have as the man who runs Jonathan LeVine Gallery often wears many hats and costumes. Having hosted many of AM’s favorite artists such as Audrey Kawasaki, Josh Keyes, James Jean, Invader, Haroshi just to name a very few, Mr. Levine’s latest project is his book Delusional from Ginko Press which chronicles from his humble beginnings of curating his first show in 1994 to his current gallery location in NYC. To celebrate they’re holding a […]

Previews: Cai Guo-Qiang – “Sky Ladder” @ MOCA (Los Angeles) – Part II

A couple days ago, we brought you images of some of the amazing gunpowder drawings being created by Cai Guo-Qiang, his assistants, and a group of volunteers at the Los Angeles MOCA. We now have for you process photos of the second commissioned piece from the renowned Chinese artist entitled Zero Gravity (approx. 11 x 39 feet), which portrays “mankind’s undying fantasy to defy gravity and its unsuccessful challenges by naive measures since antiquity.” For those interested (and if you are MOCA members), you will […]

Armory Week ’12: Armory Show – First Look (Part II)

As with most art fairs, there is such a overwhelming amount of art, it’s hard to take in all the goodness in one pass. After Part I of our look at the main fair, we now have a second set of photos to share with you from the Armory. Enjoy the viewing as we work on getting you more coverage of additional select satellite fairs and events. Photoset after the jump…

Streets: Retna Mural on Bowery & Houston (Part II)

After spending some time with LA artist RETNA (featured) as he put his mark on the iconic Bowery & Houston wall in New York (covered here), AM headed back to see the finishing touches. As you can see, the MSK writer’s calligraphy is getting increasingly complex and is undecipherable for those who aren’t in the know. Luckily for those curious, we have a photo of part of the message he was painting. See this and more photos taken for us by Joe Russo after the jump…

Openings: Herakut – “After the Laughter” @ Lebasse Projects (Chinatown)

Last month, German duo Herakut arrived in Los Angeles for a special exhibition highlighting their work not only with paintings but also with sculptures, photography and installations. Held at Lebasse Projects in Chinatown, the show also coincided with the release of their book After The Laughter which chronicles their work together during the past number of years. The night was packed from beginning to end with fans wanting to get their book signed by the two artists. Also, various members from the Lucent Dossier crew, […]

Michael Heizer – “Levitated Mass” for LACMA (In Transit)

Levitated Mass is a project conceived by artist Michael Heizer in 1968, that has waited until now after he has spent decades looking for an appropriate sized boulder. The installation on the LACMA campus will consist of a 456-foot-long slot, over which is placed said granite megalith, all of which conceptually speaks to “the expanse of art history, from ancient traditions of creating artworks from megalithic stone, to modern forms of abstract geometries and cutting-edge feats of engineering.” This newest construct is one in a […]

It took us hours to run through and scan the booths to bring you a selection of images. Check it out after the jump.

Book Signing: Mark Ryden @ Taschen Books

Last week in Los Angeles at Taschen Books,  Mark Ryden held a signing for his comprehensive publication – Pinxit. As we witnessed during the Art Basel Miami release party (here), this is the “bible” for collectors of the renowned low brow artist’s work as its 366 pages Ryden’s 20 year career and art like no other book can. While the current Collector’s Edition was too pricey for the casual fan (a regular edition will be released later), Ryden could be seen autographing other items (like […]

The just announced 2012 lineup includes the likes of Faith 47, DAL, Ricky Powell, Eugene Kan, Joy Yoon and Chase Bojorquez capturing a diverse […]

Openings: Jaybo Monk @ Soze Gallery

Last week, the Soze Gallery was proud to present the work and first L.A. exhibition from Jaybo Monk. Titled Silent/Listen, this show unveiled a number of paintings in which the artist fused an interesting style of portraiture, collage, and linear perspective. Also utilizing the human body as the focus to various of his pieces, the French-born artist managed to present a collection of art which felt both original and visually arresting. Apart from this work, a special collaboration was on display which featured Monk’s style […]
