London-based artist, Word to Mother’s (interviewed) latest offerings were put on display last Saturday evening at White Walls in an exhibition entitled Can’t Afford to be Broke (previewed). With this show, he took his weathered assemblage style and incorporated past and current pop icons with typography to create a commentary on the current state of our economy and society. The pieces evoke a sense of desperation, yet with some humor and color, there is still some optimism. In addition to the mixed media pieces on wood, an exclusive zine with a hand-pulled screen printed cover was for sale, as well as a few “MOTHER” printed dollar bills to be found hidden in the couch in front of the installation.
