Jack Shainman Gallery is currently showing a two part solo debut with the gallery, by recognized Titus Kaphar. Drawing The Blinds is a survey of new, mostly large size paintings that are painted and than manipulated with American artist’s recognizable interventions.

Through his process, the artist is moving his seemingly classical oils to a sculptural and conceptual sphere. By cutting out characters or parts of the paintings, slicing or shredding the canvas, using it as a curtain to cover or show another image, he is showing an alternate story behind the obvious, primary one. This distinctive technique enriches the works not only visually or conceptually, but also gives the observer the chance to fill in the space and complete the work with their own story. Also, his seemingly destructive interventions to classic-looking oils add a feeling of tension and uneasiness to these works that are often refer to familiar political or historic moments. The other part of the show includes drawings and tar covered paintings, and they will both stay on view until 21st of February.
