On January 12th, Corey Helford Gallery will be presenting another new body of work from Kazuki Takamatsu in their Downtown Los Angeles showspace. The Way To Release From The Restraint features the Japanese artist’s surreal imagery created with his unique monochromatic depth mapping technique, starting digitally and ending with hand painting. His precociously seductive characters, mixed with symbols of death & violence, balance between the worlds of kawaii and darker themes. On April 23rd, Corey Helford Gallery will be hosting a new solo from Kazuki Takamatsu entitled Decoration Armament. This will be the Japanese artist’s third showing with the gallery in Los Angeles and will feature his depth map pieces created through his unique process that starts digitally and ends hand painted. Always dealing with ideas of death, spirituality, and the younger generation, his surreal images are beautiful to behold with complex layers that seem to glow. Over the weekend, art fans in Los Angeles saw the return of Kazuki Takamatsu and his gradient map textured portaiture in a new show entitled Spiral of Emotions. Exhibiting at CHG Circa (see 2013 at the sister gallery), the Japanese artist brought with him a new set of glowing paintings featuring ghostly silhouettes of children and adolescents, often intermingled with symbols of death and violence. On the 21st of June, CHG Circa in Culver City will be hosting the opening of a new show (see 2013) from Kazuki Takamatsu entitled Spiral of Emotions. Using a combination of digital and more traditional mediums, the ghostly portraits are created with depth map techniques and a layering process. The x-ray like paintings features adolescents and children, textured in graduated spirals, oftentimes juxtaposed against symbols death and violence – his portrayal of the youth or “lost generation” in Japan. Last weekend at the Corey Helford Gallery, the ghostly works of Kazuki Takamatsu were put on display at the opening reception. Patrons and collectors in Los Angeles took in what we already saw from Basel Week Miami last year – the almost glowing, mostly monochromatic portraits created through a personalized process by the Japanese artist. The topographical rendering is a result of both computer as well as traditional painting techniques and really make the image “pop” from the canvas. We’ve touched on the work of Kazuki Takamatsu before here on AM in a couple group shows, but seeing an entire series of works at the Gallery Tomura booth at SCOPE Miami (highlights here) really piqued our interest. The Japanese artist based in Sendai combines the use of computer imaging with traditional techniques to create eerie ghostlike characters through the medium of acrylic and gouache.
