Basel Week Miami ’10 – The Island

During the week of Art Basel Miami Beach, there are countless fairs to check out, parties to attend, street and public art to peruse, and fashionable people to gaze at. Although the city facilitates much of this with its warm weather in December and abundant day and night venues, it doesn’t make much use of Miami’s natural habitat and scenic wonders.  Many who visit during Art Basel never even get to see a single wave or put on a pair of flip-flops.  Enter The Island. The piece that you see above is by Mister Cartoon and Toomer.  It is one of LA’s most famous murals and has been the background for countless photographs and […]

Openings: Ron English – “Status Factory” @ Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion

Known for its year-round sunshine, Disneyland, and tradition of conservatism, one thing Orange County is not known for is its high caliber art exhibitions.  Recently, The Orange Coast College Frank M. Doyle Arts Pavilion, along with Opera Gallery and Hurley came together and did their part to help shatter that cultural deficiency with a sweeping, immersive, and ambitious show by POPaganda master Ron English.  The amazing exhibition features over 100 of the artist’s works, from paintings to installations to sculptures.  Each work is amazing and […]

Openings: Erik Parker – “Endless Anytime” @ Honor Fraser

Currently on view at Honor Fraser in Culver City is New York-based artist Erik Parker’s Endless Anytime – a exhibition of new paintings that marks a shift in the artist’s subject matter. While his recognizable bright, vibrant, and saturated colors are still represented on each canvas, the show features nudes, still lifes, and landscapes in place of psychedelic amorphous figures. While classical in the tradition of such artists as Picasso and Matisse, the paintings have a contemporary edge to them and have the unmistakable feel […]
