Nancy Rubins – “Works for New Space, Stainless Steel, Aluminum, Monochrome I & II” @ Gagosian Gallery, Beverly Hills

Nancy Rubins, whose monumental sculptures are prominently on outdoor display at MOCA Los Angeles and MOCA San Diego, now takes over the inside one of Southern California’s finest galleries – Gagosian Gallery in Beverly Hills. The artist has built two spectacular sculptures in the recently unveiled addition to the gallery. They were built on-site and are made of a variety of aluminum boats, including canoes, rowboats, and jon boats. Rubins makes two powerful assemblages that, taken as a whole, are much more powerful than each […]

Openings: Victor Reyes – “Misspelled” @ Robert Berman Gallery/E6

Letters – we’ve learned about them before we even enter kindergarten, practice writing them in school for years, and use them countless times everyday to communicate. They are vital to our lives, yet how many of us really take the time to examine, dissect, and improve upon their appearance? Even the most normally basic of forms want to be prettied up, admired, and told that they were beautiful and enriched your lives; show you things you’ve never considered before. Victor Reyes is acutely aware of […]

Jakub Julian Ziolkowski – “Timothy Galoty & The Dead Brains” @ Hauser & Wirth NYC

Timothy Galoty & The Dead Brains is Jakub Julian Ziolkowski’s first solo exhibition in the US. The Polish painter unveils 28 paintings, which all seem to have been created this year. Off the bat, we can see that he works pretty fast and has a wildly vivid imagination. The title of the show refers to an imaginary rock band that occupies the universe Ziolkowski has given birth to. It is one that is surreal, macabre, dream-like, fluid, colorful, horrific, and beautiful. The work seems deeply […]

Robert Longo x Bottega Veneta

In the ’80s, it was Robert Longo who originated the often-imitated (Apple iPod ads, anyone?) style of twisting, turning, and contorting action shots in his series Men in the Cities. Recently, Bottega Veneta came correct by hiring the artist to work on their ad campaign, instead of copying him. Longo’s photographs will appear in the Fall-Winter 2010/2011 marketing materials for the high-fashion label, continuing the recent trend of partnerships (Ryan McGinley, Aakash Nihalani, Eine, etc.) between artists and brands. More images and video from the […]

Openings: Dennis Hopper – “Double Standard” @ MOCA

The Jeffrey Deitch era at MOCA has officially begun with his first show as director of the esteemed institution – Dennis Hopper’s Double Standard. The retrospective, curated by Julian Schnabel and with assistance from dealer Tony Shafrazi, takes place at MOCA’s Geffen Contemporary location and includes Hopper’s photographs, sculptures, films, and paintings, which included elements of pop, abstract expressionism, photorealism, and graffiti. With the actor and artist’s recent death still fresh in the minds of everyone in attendance, the exhibition was a timely one and […]

Jeff Koons Installation @ Advocate Hope Children’s Hospital09

Jeff Koons and RxArt has teamed up to make the hospital a less intimidating space for young patients, hopefully helping to soothe fears and brighten moods. The world-renowned pop artist has transformed the usually sterile CT scan room with his familiar icons – including the Balloon Dog, Hanging Heart, and Monkeys. Known for being one of the most well-paid artists today, Koons generously provided the work with no artist fee. In addition, Kiehl’s also provided support for the project. Kudos to RxArt, Kiehl’s and Jeff […]

Preview: Boogie – “The Uncovering” @ Carmichael Gallery

This Saturday, July 10, Carmichael Gallery in Culver City opens a show of photographs by international photographer and Brooklyn resident Boogie. The artist, who was born and raised in Belgrade, Serbia, started his photographic career by documenting rebellion and civil unrest during the civil war in his native land. He has taken that experience and applied it to provide honest portrayals of the streets and fringes of society, including gangsters, prostitutes, and junkies. “The Uncovering” involves the narrative space between endings and new beginnings and […]
