Releases: Shepard Fairey Mr. Spray Vinyl Figure

Hot on the heals of his blowout solo in SoHo (covered), Shepard Fairey has announced that his Mr. Spray is finally being released, after we brought you a first look at the figure when we visited his studio in 2008. Mr. Spray, originally conceived of in 2004 as a 50’s-era advertising mascot, will be rendered in 3-dimensions by acclaimed vinyl toy masters, STRANGEco. Standing 11″ tall and fittingly bundled with a mini Andre the Giant stencil, the iconic character will be produced in four limited […]

Preview: KAWS @ Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum

Here’s a quick sampling of what fans of Brooklyn-based contemporary artist, KAWS, will have in store for themselves tomorrow night during the opening of his first museum exhibition at The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum. Bringing his own brand of street inspired pop art to such an elevated stage is no doubt a crowning achievement for an artist who initially made his way bombing billboards and beautifying phonebooths and bus-stops in and around NYC. With more attention deservedly being paid to the artist as a result […]

Showing: Jason Alper – “It’s All Back On”

Fine art and Hollywood intersect in many different ways. Of course, there’s the inseparable connection between celebrity actors and their collecting habits. With respect to the artists themselves, that crossover occurs more often than not with trained artists lending their talents to the design of ad campaigns for films. Rarely, does it go the other way, with someone from the film industry trying their hand at the art world. Jason Alper seeks to realize that crossroads in striking fashion with his first gallery exhibit ever […]

Teaser: Scott Campbell – “If You Don’t Belong, Don’t Be Long” @ OHWOW

What steps might an artist take if charged with the task of rewriting monetary policy? Scott Campbell’s Cut Currency series seeks to address this question, with tongue firmly implanted in cheek. Talk about adding value to an increasingly worthless piece of paper, the artist’s work aims to repurpose the greenback in an imaginative and compelling manner. The acclaimed tattoo artist turned gallery provocateur will bring his revisioning of the US Dollar, along with a host of paintings and drawings, to NYC on April 29th for […]

Preview: Masakatsu Sashie – “Twentieth Century Boy”

Opening tomorrow night in Hollywood (as we told a couple weeks ago) is Japanese phenom Masakatsu Sashie’s tribute to the British glam rock band T-Rex. Riffing on his trademark floating orbs, typically composed of reclaimed vending machines, electronics and cultural scraps, Sashie has meticulously hidden references of one of his favorite bands within this batch of paintings. Thanks to curatorial work of Darren Romanelli (designer of Dr. Romanelli clothing) and Eric Nakamura (owner of Giant Robot), collectors in Southern California will have an opportunity to […]

Much like the original Brown version, this monochromatic colorway will most likely be in an edition of 100 and retail for approximately $6000US. No word yet on an unlikely official kawsone.com […]

Preview: Chris Berens @ Roq La Rue

Like something out of a lucid dream, Chris Berens’ paintings are as enigmatic and imaginative as they come. Both from a technical perspective as well as an aesthetic viewpoint, there is something wonderfully amorphous and endless about his work. His art appears as sinister as it does beautiful, teetering that fantastical line between foreign yet familiar, gorgeous yet grotesque, bizarre yet natural. With certain elements appearing crystal clear and others blurred, it’s as if they were representations of a person attempting to transcribe the images […]
