FAME Festival ’11: Sam3

In our continuing coverage of this year’s FAME Festival, we now bring you the work of Sam3. Last seen in Poland and Madrid with his more traditional, nature-inspired murals, the Spanish street artist tried something completely different in the streets of Grottaglie. In perhaps a deliberate – or not – riff on VOINA’s infamous Dick Captured by KGB street action, the abstracted lines of spray paint assemble together like a jigsaw puzzle when viewed from an upstairs bathroom window, where the sizable piece is realized […]

Streets: TWIST & AMAZE (Sydney)

After stopping off in Venice for the opening of his latest solo show, Barry McGee (aka TWIST) appears to have continued his world travels abroad by heading down to Australia with long time friend and cohort Josh Lazcano (aka AMAZE). In a nod to arguably their most iconic collaborative mural composition, last seen at the famed Houston & Bowery wall last summer, the THR (The Human Race) crew members went big and bold in the Central Business District of Sydney. The minimalism of the mural, with […]

Previews / Installations: Greg Lamarche – “I Can See For Miles” @ Known Gallery

In a decidedly busy summer, Greg Lamarche (interviewed) and his artwork were all over the place, from a full showing in Toronto alongside Dalek, as well as group shows in New York and San Francisco. Now, as summer formerly came to a close a couple weeks back, Lamarche keeps cutting and pasting for a show with Known Gallery. Opening this weekend alongside Eric Haze’s New Mathematics (teased), I Can See For Miles brings former graffiti writer SP ONE’s unique typographic and abstract paper collages to Los […]

Streets: Phlegm – “calibrating the seeing device” (Croatia)

The pervasive Sheffield street artist Phlegm is at it again, this time in Croatia. After recently endowing the streets of London with a steampunk-inspired flying machine, he bestows the Balkans with the longest, most technologically superior seeing device ever. Brilliantly using the architectural details of the space, Phlegm transforms a security gate at the end of the wall into a entry hatch for his signature characters to gain access inside and calibrate the massive telescope. His monochromatic palette, free hand execution, and whimsical narrative has […]

Openings: LUDO – “Metamorphosis” @ High Roller Society

Opening his first solo exhibition in London over the weekend, LUDO (interviewed) yet again showed his artistic dexterity in multiple mediums at High Roller Society. Much like his Zurich solo back in April, Metamorphosis (previewed) offered an strong selection of large graphite and oil drawings, focusing on his signature weaponized insects. Preferring to work on paper, these large scale works illustrate the French artist’s deft drawing abilities and provide reference to the massive paper wheatpastes he utilizes for his street work. The focal point of the […]

Teaser: Matthew Palladino @ Texas Contemporary Art Fair

With a successful NYC exhibition back in June that saw strong institutional interest, the ever-dynamic Matthew Palladino (interviewed) looks to continue exploiting his near never-ending supply of creative juices with his most recent painting. Destined for the Texas Contemporary Art Fair, the hypnotic painting executed in his color rich, isometric perspective (or “fake” perspective, as Matthew originally self-ascribed), producing that uniquely flat, two dimensional aesthetic of a three-dimensional environment, will be on display at the Eli Ridgway booth (formerly Baer Ridgway, with co-owner Kent Baer […]

Openings: Chris Johanson – “Alright Alright” @ Malmö Konsthall

This past weekend, Chris Johanson opened his massive retrospective at Malmö Konsthall in Sweden. Organized by Galleri Nicolai Wallner, Alright Alright (previewed) presents an extensive collection of large scale paintings, smaller works on paper, and mixed-media sculptures from the Portland-based artist, collectively exploring such existential issues as “self-delusion, alienation, deceit, and monotony”. The installation of the work was particular unique, displayed on rustic easels within the open layout of the venue for attendees to weave in and out of and interact with on a more intimate […]

Releases: David Shrigley – “WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING?” @ WORD Bookstore

On Thursday, September 22nd, David Shrigley will be at WORD Bookstore in Brooklyn, NY to celebrate the launch of WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU DOING? The evening will include a talk, book signing and sharpie tattoos by the Glasgow-based artist. East River Tattoo will also be on hand to permanently ink Shrigley drawings onto his most serious fans, a ballsy act amongst diehard fans last seen during the Frieze 2010 Art Fair. There will also be a raffle, sponsored by Anton Kern Gallery, for the […]

Swoon – “Anthropocene Extinction” @ ICA Boston

As we previewed the installation process a couple weeks back, Swoon (interviewed) has now completed her site-specific installation Anthropocene Extinction for The Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston (ICA). Commissioned by the ICA as the fifth – and largest to date – project for the Sandra and Gerald Fineberg Art Wall, SWOON’s impressive creation that addresses humanities impact on the environment is anchored by a mural that spans the entire length of the lobby and rises 40 feet to the ceiling. A large scale portrait one of […]

JR – “Time is Now, Yalla!” in Israel / Palestine

After being honored as this years TED Prize recipient back in March, and announcing his wish to “Use art to turn the world Inside Out”, his global-participatory art project, aptly dubbed Inside Out (see video trailer here), has taken shape and gained momentum ever since. By utilizing one’s personal identity as means to share stories and unify different cultures the world over, every single person on this planet is encouraged to upload a portrait of their face to the Inside Out website, whereupon a black […]
