Saturday afternoon in San Francisco, Eli Ridgway Gallery opened its doors to Matthew Palladino’s latest solo show entitled Sweet Relief (previewed). Palladino brought his usual color palette and thought-provoking narrative (often using using common objects & repetition), expanding it into a three-dimensional form by creating painted relief sculptures utilizing re-purposed chocolate molds. Last Saturday, Shooting Gallery opened the doors to Parisian street stencil artist, C215’s latest solo show, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes (previewed). The show is inspired by cigarette iconography and advertisements that lie and typically depict affluent people enjoying a smoke in order to sell their products to the common folk and working class. The stencil pieces in the show consists of fake adverts that depict everyday people who are actually smoking the cigarettes and are the targets of these corporations, but are never shown. […]

Blek le Rat opened up his latest exhibition, 60/30 Saturday at 941 Geary. The title of the exhibition represents his 60th birthday and 30 years of being an artist and celebrates a career that has heavily influenced the street art being put up today. The show consists mainly of large canvases featuring worked backgrounds and his signature stencil work, with a few collaborations with artists such as Hush and APEX in the mix. Last Thursday, Bay Area artist Mitsy Ávila Ovalles opened up her latest solo show in her hometown of San Jose at Cukui, a clothing store that also holds monthly art exhibitions on one end. Her work is done in a wide variety of mediums that include painting, crochet and digital, which is heavily influenced by Mexican pop culture, b-list celebrities, food and sports (like a misguided Dodger fan). Openings: Augustine Kofie – “Circulatory System” @ White Walls

Saturday evening, White Walls opened its doors to Augustine Kofie’s second solo show at the gallery, Circulatory System (previewed in our studio visit). The new body of work consisted of 30 pieces including small studies, medium and large scale pieces on wood and canvas, as well as a few hand painted multiple prints. This show concentrates on circular shapes in an interconnect system, while consistently maintaining the draftsman-like quality in his signature style. Mars-1 opened up his show, Everything Under The Sun (previewed) to a packed house at Fecal Face Dot Gallery’s temporary space in the inner Richmond area of San Francisco Saturday night (the gallery’s usual spot is under renovation due to a fire at a neighboring building). Last weekend, the non-profit Luggage Store Gallery held a benefit auction to support their efforts in programming future exhibitions, Tenderloin National Forest, public art programs, artist in residency as well as the Short Cuts and The Creative Music Series. Last Saturday evening, Spoke Art hosted Washington DC-based artist Sam Wolf Connelly’s first solo exhibition. The show is entitled Semiprecious, with the works having the narrative of being left behind because of flaws, for something more special and perfect. The significance of the gems in his work represents someone trying to steal back what they’ve lost, but ending up digging themselves in a hole that they cannot get out of (like ending up in a mineshaft and being stuck with nothing but gems and soot).
