Tonight, in the middle of a hot NYC summer, Jonathan LeVine Gallery will be opening a group exhibition entitled Cruel Summer. Curated by collector, graffiti historian and urban anthropologist Roger Gastman, the exhibition is inspired by the summer of 1984 and the song Cruel Summer by Bananarama. Dutch artist and illustrator Femke Hiemstra (featured) returns to Roq La Rue Gallery for a shared solo alongside Casey Weldon (featured) on Thursday, August 7th. Titled Warten am Waldrand or Waiting at The Edge of the Forest, this is her 7th show with the Seattle gallery. Included in the exhibition are graphite drawings, painted vintage book covers, and pieces on found antique objects, part of her recognizable, signature types of works. Streets: Phlegm (Norway)

Phlegm was recently invited to Norway by Urban Samtidskunst and Galleri Lauritzen to paint a large mural in the old industrial town of Moss. After being forced to take some time off due to neck problems, the Sheffield-based artist created a groundbreaking piece on many levels. The mural was painted on this massive 25x35m wall of an old paper factory that was shut two years ago. It doesn’t happen often that Greg “Craola” Simkins (featured) grabs a spray can, but when he does, he usually creates something exceptional. After not painting walls for quite some time, his newest mural, which he recently finished in Los Angeles, is definitely an example of that. Mexican artist Edgar Nández aka Saner, opened his first museum solo show on June 20th at the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Luis Potosí, introducing over 25 new works. Hawaii earlier this year (covered), Hawaii-based artists Kamea Hadar and Defer (seen above adding his calligraphic embellishments to Hadar’s figurative imagery) began a year-long series of collaborative walls, gallery shows and other creative projects. LUDO (interviewed) is currently back home in Paris, spending long days creating new works for his upcoming London solo show at his studio, and pasting up public works on early weekend mornings. Dream Catcher is the newest mural created by Polish art duo Etam Cru. Both members, Sainer and Bezt, painted this large piece in Lubin, for the LFG: ALL MY CITY ’14, organised by the Europejska Fundacja Kultury Miejskiej and Brain Damage Gallery.
