Openings: Blaine Fontana & David Rice – “Chromagrain” @ Svper Ordinary

Portland residents David Rice and Blaine Fontana besieged the Mile High City recently with their latest show Chromagrain at Svper Ordinary Gallery. Residents of Denver are familiar with what these two are capable of together as their collaboration mural was one of the featured pieces at last year’s Colorado Crush street art festival. A scant 12 months later they are back in Denver, this time with close to 15 new pieces all featuring their signature imagery & geometry combinations, welcomed by a large crowd of enthusiastic fans. Openings: Mando Marie – “Long Ways” @ Svper Ordinary

It was a grey, rainy Friday night on April 15th when Denver’s Svper Ordinary unveiled the newest body of work from stencil artist and Denver resident Mando Marie (also known as Amanda Marie). The new work contains number of new images and themes, but features the nostalgia and narrative elements that she is best known for. Long Ways is a homecoming for the RMCAD graduate, returning to Colorado after a string of successful exhibitions across Europe and at White Walls in San Francisco. The show will be on display until […]

Openings: Laura Ball – “Keep” @ David B. Smith

AM was on hand for the October 16th opening reception of Laura Ball’s newest show Keep, her second solo at Denver’s David B. Smith Gallery. Using watercolor paint and graphite, Ball’s work is a subconscious exploration of the Hero Myth of Joseph Campbell. The series is composed of intertwined animals interacting on a white background, undulating and full of subtle details, making the work highly engaging. Installation shots via the gallery. Studio Visits: Regan Rosburg

AM recently got the chance to visit Regan Rosburg in her Denver studio, complete with animal skeletons, insect carcasses and all the flora and fauna she uses to make her envirocentric creations. Her work is equal parts visual art to be enjoyed by the viewer and a call to action to conserve nature. She is best known for her ability to use resin to create depth and an uncanny feeling of life in suspension, giving her work an unusual mix of natural beauty and an ever present uneasiness that the […]

Openings: Jeremy Fish – “Anger Management” @ Black Book Gallery

A large group of enthusiastic fans were on hand to greet Jeremy Fish (featured) during his July 3rd opening at Denver’s Black Book Gallery. The show is titled Anger Management and features 18 new pieces of work, largely inspired by his recent aneurysm and resulting need to find a way to mellow out. The show will be on display until July 25th, so stop by if you are in the area. Discuss Jeremy Fish here.

Openings: Shawn Huckins – “The American _ _ tier” @ Goodwin Fine Art

AM was on hand for the April 17th opening reception of The American _ _ tier solo show from Shawn Huckins (see the recent studio visit here) at Goodwin Fine Art in Denver. There is an almost universal appeal to period specific portraits, as is evident in their prominence in museums and noteworthy collections. The real brilliance of Mr. Huckins’ work is adding a lighthearted element to this gorgeous portraiture, giving the viewer permission to enjoy a piece of work that without the addition of text could seem stuffy or overly serious, […]

Studio Visits: Shawn Huckins

When AM arrived at Shawn Huckins‘ studio in Denver’s trendy Lowry district, the paintings were finished, the oil dry and most already packed up and ready to send across town to Goodwin Fine Art for his solo show entitled American_tier opening April 17th (stay tuned for opening night coverage). Huckins is best known for his ability to engage viewers using classic style paintings of historical figures with overlaid text, the final piece being equal parts gorgeous portraiture and lighthearted humor. For each series, he has concentrated on a different period of […]

Preview: “Brink” @ Antler Gallery

The master curators at Antler Gallery have brought together 18 artists to not only raise money for the Audubon Society of Portland, but also put on a hell of an art show. One of things that makes Antler such a good gallery is their ability to bring together an exceptional roster of artists, but maintain a very tight, dialed in feel such that each show looks complete and the art looks great together. A contribution of 20% of each piece sold will go to the Audubon […]

Openings: Christian Rex van Minnen – “Golden Memes” @ Robischon Gallery

AM recently joined the masses at Robischon Gallery for the January 15th opening of Christian Rex van Minnen’s Golden Memes. The show is a homecoming for the New York-based artist, who brought his grotesque re-imagining of the Dutch Golden Age to Denver. The exhibition includes ten pieces of new work, most large in scale, making the bizarre imagery even more powerful. The show will be on display until March 7th, so stop by for a look yourself if you are in the area. Discuss Christian Rex van Minnen here.

Openings: Mars-1, Oliver Vernon, Damon Soule – “Momentum” @ Space Gallery

Arrested Motion was on hand for the Saturday, November 8th opening of “Momentum”, the three person show featuring Mars-1, Oliver Vernon and Damon Soule  at Space Gallery in Denver, Colorado.  The highlight of the exhibition was a 10′ by 23′ piece that was a collaboration of all three artists (called The Furtherrr Collective when assembled), a piece so large and powerful in texture, color, and size that it feels as if a riff has opened up and the wall has become a worm hole into […]
