It was a night to remember. Last week, the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles opened its doors to an extensive survey of Gary Baseman’s career and life entitled The Door Is Always Open. Friends, family, fellow artists, collectors, admirers, and well wishers alike attended to show their respects to the pervasive artist and his illustrious accomplishments. Openings: Shag – “Thursday’s Girl” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Currently showing at the Jonathan LeVine Gallery through May 4th is Thursday’s Girl from painter Josh Agle, otherwise known as SHAG (interviewed). For his fourth solo exhibition with the Chelsea showspace, the Socal-based painter presents a new body of work inspired by “All Tomorrow’s Parties, the classic Velvet Underground song in which lyrics written by Lou Reed spoke to New York’s downtown art scene found in places such as Warhol’s Factory.” The pieces reflect an aesthetic strongly influenced by mid-century modern design and are rendered in his distinctive style and palette. Streets: José Parlá x JR @ Bryce Wolkowitz

In preparation for their joint show opening on May 7th at the Bryce Wolkowitz Gallery, JR and José Parlá worked on a mural together in Chelsea over the weekend. The piece is a followup to the epic series of walls they collaborated on in Cuba last year (covered) and will be the subject of their exhibition – The Wrinkles of the City, Havana, Cuba. Previews: “Wider than a postcard” @ Breeze Block Gallery

On the back of his Space//Form group exhibition last year (covered), Arrested Motion’s Sven Davis is working with Breeze Block Gallery in Portland again on another huge group event entitled Wider than a postcard. With over 200 artists and 400 individual works, this exhibition looks to be both bigger than the previous event and also smaller at the same time as all of the artworks are postcard sized at 6×4 inches. Meggs for The Hundreds

If you remember, Australian artist Meggs was in town for a solo exhibition currently showing in Los Angeles at the Thinkspace Gallery (covered). While here, he also was asked to paint a mural at The Hundreds warehouse complex (also see Stephen Harrington). The piece features a skull in hand rendered in his signature comic-inspired style. Earlier this month, Bischoff Projects in Frankfurt hosted a new showing from Ryan McGinley entitled Running Water, What Are You Running From? In addition to large-scale editions of the New York-based artist’s photos, there were also some smaller prints that were arranged in a cluster against one wall. Releases: Yoskay Yamamoto – “my little universe” Sets

Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed), whom we last hung out with in Hawaii as he painted a mural for POW WOW, recently released a sets of matching sculptures and paintings. Each is entitled a numbered my little universe with the the paintings measuring 6″ x 6″ and the sculptures each two inches in diameter. Streets: Miss Van (Brazil) – Part II

Recently, French street painter Miss Van has been spending quite a bit of time in Brazil. While there for four months, she mostly stayed in the hotbed of street activity and home to many artists seen here AM – Sao Paulo. She was able to get up solo on multiple walls, but much of the time was also spent painting with friends like Zezao, CiroSchu, and Titifreak. Last week, MOHS Exhibit in Copenhagen presented all new work from Dennis McNett (featured) collectively entitled Wolfbats Are Real. Including wood block pieces in the standard format, the Brooklyn-based also created installations in the style of his previous shows – all paying tribute to mythical creatures that make up part of his imagery.
