Streets: ROA (Berlin)

Belgium-based ROA was recently in Berlin for a solo showing (covered) and of course, he couldn’t leave town without painting some walls. The massive project came together with the help of KJOSK & Skalitzers and features some of his signature imagery of creatures hung up and stacked together. Drawing comparisons to his recent mural at the Pasadena Museum of California Art for the Street Cred exhibition (covered), RETNA (featured) lent his street calligraphy to an ambitious new project with Kenny Scharf and Shepard Fairey in Los Angeles. Tonight at LeBasse Projects in the Los Angeles Chinatown, Melissa Haslam (featured) will be presenting a new body of work that promises an increased attention to detail and realism as she continues to refine her technique. Drawing her inspiration from the Japanese subculture of fashioning oneself to look like stuffed animals or Kigurumi, the Australia-based painter uses this metaphor to explore ideas social role-playing. Just several days ago, LA-based and pink enthusiast Buff Monster (featured) re-visited a spot he hit up years ago above Hollywood Boulevard and pasted up an updated piece featuring his signature imagery. The busy artist who also recently patined up Bristol and London with wall murals will be showing along with Jeremyville at the Cotton Candy Machine starting on August 5th in New York. Releases: David Choe – “Dirty Hands” DVD & Live Streaming

Provocative street artist David Choe (featured) is finally releasing the long awaited DVD for his documentary Dirty Hands through Upper Playground. The movie, put together by Harry Kim, originally premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival to multiple sold-out screenings and went on to win the Best Documentary award at the San Diego Asian Film Festival. Openings: COPE2 – “AUTHENTIC” @ Maximillian Gallery

Several months after hitting up his home city with a show (covered), NY graf legend COPE2 travels to the other coast for a show in Los Angeles. AUTHENTIC, which opened last week at Maximillian Gallery, is billed as his first solo in the City of Angels and is a retrospective featuring throwups, pieces, his signature MTA subway maps, and miniature subway trains. You may remember when we first introduced you to Ukranian street duo Interesni Kazki last year when we featured some of their work in Barcelona. Now, fast forward to this recent mural the two (AEC and Waone) painted in Ekaterinburg, Russia entitled Sisyphus, which references a character in Greek mythology except remixed with a modern twist.
