Openings: Zhang Huan – “49 Days” @ Blum & Poe

Last night, Culver City gallery-goers were treated to a fascinating collection of brick sculptures from Shanghai and NY based Zhang Huan. The versatile Chinese artist started off as a noted performance artist but has since branched out to many other art forms including the discipline of choice for this 49 Days exhibition at Blum & Poe, also his first solo ever in Los Angeles. The body of work centers around the story of Zhu Gangqiang (Cast-Iron Pig), the nickname given to a pig that survived […]

Release: Mark Dean Veca – The Hundreds Skate Deck & Shoe

Continuing his collaboration with The Hundreds, Mark Dean Veca (interviewed) will be releasing a skate deck and kicks (Johnson Mid) featuring his signature “Toile de Jouy” abstractions. The shoe’s pattern is based on the image above which is also chock full of pop references like Hank Williams, Franz Kline, Ed Ruscha’s Hollywood Sign, Lil’ Annie Fannie, and Green Eggs and Ham. There are more images of the shoes, skateboards, and art work after the jump for those interested. Also, for those in LA, Mark will […]

Preview: Kent Williams – “Convergence” @ Merry Karnowsky (Los Angeles)

On a busy Saturday night of art in Los Angeles, make sure you add Kent Williams’ opening at Merry Karnowsky to your gallery hopping itinerary. The collection of paintings entitled Convergence incorporates some of the work shown in New Mexico last September (covered) along with some new pieces all featuring his distinctive take on classical studies of the human form, some quite impressive in scale as you will see from these preview images. More after the jump.

Videos / Streets: Hush – “Twin” (Los Angeles)

Finding time before his opening in Los Angeles tomorrow night, Hush’s (interviewed) hit up a wall with his multi-textured technique.  The mural at De La Barracuda is consistent with his new body of work that plays with the idea of duality through a series of Twin paintings.  On a busy Saturday night of art, make sure you make time to head over to New Image Art between 7-10pm.

Video: RETNA x Vistajet Project

A notable artist missing from the Street Cred opening at the PMCA last weekend was street calligraphist RETNA (featured).  All the more curious as he was arguably the most visible participant seeing that he painted the entire facade of the museum. Now we know why. He was in Geneva at EBACE2011 finally realizing the project we first told you about here by getting up on Global Express XRS for VistaJet. Via Known Gallery. Discuss RETNA here.

If you are in New York this weekend, you don’t want to miss Afterglow, Mars-1’s (featured) latest body of work slated for a Thursday night opening at Jonathan LeVine. Tomorrow night in Denver, Kris Lewis (interviewed) returns to David B. Smith Gallery with a striking new body of work after a successful showing there in 2009.  The new collection of oil paintings feature his detailed renditions of mostly female characters all while focusing on capturing the emotional essence of each portrait. Also, as you will see, he continues to explore themes of the ocean and interplay of water in some of the works. More preview images after the jump…

Jessica Harrison – “Broken” @ Jealous Gallery

A show that closed just last weekend at the Jealous Gallery in London was a collection of sculptures that might not be for the faint of heart. Broken (previewed), from Jessica Harrison, is comprised of a series of classic delicate figurines common in the UK but with a gory twist.  For this particular line of work from the multi-talented artist, the dancing ladies don’t let a little disembowelment or unroofing of their brains get in the way of their fun, seemingly oblivious to the various mutilations […]

Interview / Preview: Jeff Ramirez – “Being There” @ Thinkspace Gallery

AM recently sat down with an artist we have been meaning to talk to for while now to learn a little more about him and his upcoming joint show at the Thinkspace Gallery in Culver City opening May 21st. The vivid hyperrealistic paintings of Jeff Ramirez have always drawn our attention with their curious poses and refreshing angles, an ode to his skills with the camera as he photographs all his own references – something he discusses in our interview among other things… Questions and […]
