Openings: Clayton Brothers – “Inside Out” @ Pasadena Museum of California Art

A couple of nights ago, we headed over to the Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA) to check out two show openings.  One was Street Cred (covered), and the other was Inside Out from the renowned Clayton Brothers (featured). If you remember, last September, Christian and Rob presented an exhibition with the same title at the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA), so this is the second showing for this retrospective body of work. We didn’t have the opportunity to attend that show in Wisconsin, but […]

Openings: “Street Cred” @ Pasadena Museum of California Art

Last night in Pasadena, the art and influence of graffiti in Los Angeles was on full display as Street Cred at the Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA) opened its doors to a group of artists ranging in genres from letter-based legends like SABER, RISK, and RETNA (who also painted the facade of the museum), to so called post-graffiti abstract expressionism by painters like Augustine Kofie (whose mural with El Mac was put up in conjunction with the show) and Push, to fine artists such […]

Streets: Augustine Kofie & El Mac (Los Angeles)

As we mentioned in our article documenting RETNA (featured) painting the side of the Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA), tonight marks the opening of Street Cred, an exhibition featuring a LA-centric roster of graffiti and street artists (as well as fine artists who have street influences in their past). In conjunction with the show, Augustine Kofie and El Mac have recently collaborated on this mural for the 33third Store / Mid-City Arts. A number of other artists from the exhibition will also be blessing […]

Preview: Aron Wiesenfeld – “New Drawings and Paintings” @ Arcadia Fine Arts

On May 14th (4-6pm), New York will be treated to a new show from Aron Wiesenfeld including both oil and graphite works. The San Diego-based artist’s second solo at Arcadia Fine Arts will feature emotive renderings of his young characters traversing desolate landscapes (snow and water seem to appear a lot in this set of works) all infused with his superior storytelling and mastery of light.  If you are in the Big Apple this weekend, we highly recommend adding this to your plans. More preview […]

Preview: Jen Stark & Maya Hayuk – “Double Rainbow Rainbow” @ Show & Tell

There will be an interesting pairing of artists tomorrow night at the Shows & Tell Gallery in Toronto with a new exhibition entitled Double Rainbow Rainbow opening. Jen Stark, who is known for her intricately beautiful paper cuttings will be showing alongside NYC-based Maya Hayuk.  Both have shown their mastery in working with colorful patterns – Stark in the three-dimensional and Hayuk in paintings. Of particular interest to AM are these new cylindrical works from Stark that will accompany her usual paper pieces and paintings. […]

Anish Kapoor – “Leviathan” @ Grand Palais (Paris)

Anish Kapoor, who recently returned to India to open his first solo exhibition there, has now traveled to Paris, the site of his first ever exhibition 30 years ago, to unveil Leviathan. The 35 meter tall work made from PVC is 13,500 square meters when inflated, forming a cathedral-like space inside (which viewers can enter) creating the illusion of being inside a giant whale. Kapoor has dedicated this new massive work, currently showing at the Monumenta exhibition in Paris’ Grand Palais, to Chinese activist and […]

Teaser: Greg Simkins – “Escape With Me” @ Yves Laroche

After successfully testing out his curatorial touch with the INLE show (covered) based on the main source of inspiration for his art – the novel Watership Down, Greg Simkins (featured) is starting to focus in on a new collection of paintings. This newest piece, entitled The Nature of Nurture, continues his recent exploration of aquatic life and makes us look forward to seeing what else he has in store for his Canadian fans when he opens up his joint show Escape With Me in June […]

Preview: Hush – “TWIN” @ New Image Art

It looks like Newcastle-based Hush’s (interviewed) will be returning (see 2009) to Los Angeles for another solo show on May 21st, this time at New Image Art. Judging from the photos, his work is becoming increasingly more intricate and textured; something that was evident in his NY show last year (covered). Also, he seems to be moving away from the influences of the Kawaii aspect of Japanese manga and towards a more somber and serious tone. More preview photos from his studio as well as […]

Openings: ESPO – “Days” @ V1 Gallery

Steve Powers aka ESPO has had a busy few weeks.  First, came his part in the time-consuming Street Market installation at the MOCA for the historic Art in the Streets exhibition. Then, last Friday in Copenhagen, he opened his latest solo show at the V1 Gallery entitled simply Days. A fitting title as the work in the show includes some of his daily metaltations ruminating on the complexities of everyday life with his poetic world play and signature visual language using enamel paint on metal. […]
