Openings: “Dreams Deferred” @ The Chinese American Museum

Last week, the Chinese American Museum (CAM) in Los Angeles opened their doors to an art show focused on immigration reform. Although the bulk of the problems the Chinese in America have had with this topic has been in the past, it is always important to bring light to some forgotten history as there is much we can learn that we can apply to the controversial topic in the present. Dreams Deferred (teased) featured many compelling pieces from some artists that you will be sure […]

Openings: “Garfield” Group Show @ The Hundreds (Pop-Up Space)

Last Thursday night, The Hundreds hosted their Garfield themed art show and celebration at a pop-up location in Santa Monica. Along with the art, there were costumed characters, a signing by Garfield creator Jim Davis, and of course, the feline’s favorite food – lasagna! Hate it or love it, it was certainly interesting to see some unexpected artists in the lineup get out of their comfort zone for some themed pieces for once. More pics after the jump via The Hundreds / Meow…

Releases: KAWS x Robert Lazzarini – “Distorted Companions”

Wow, what a stunning collaboration between Robert Lazzarini, well known for his distorted sculptures, and KAWS in what we like to call the “Distorted Companions”. Lazzarini, who you may remember recently exhibited his twisted brass knuckles alongside KAWS’ work at the It Ain’t Fair exhibition (covered) by OHWOW during Art Basel Week, is a fellow Brookylnite and seems to be a natural partner for the re-engineering of the iconic figure on its 10th anniversary. Early word (which may or may not be accurate) on these […]

To win a chance to purchase these prints, go register for an online lottery at Pictures […]

Streets: Blu for Los Angeles MOCA (Buffed)

If you blinked, you would have missed Blu’s newest mural in Los Angeles. Invited to by the MOCA to paint a wall ahead of it’s highly anticipated “Art in the Streets” exhibition in April, the museum apparently had forgotten that the Italian street sensation made his name making pointed political statements with his large-scale work, often site-specific and aimed directly at the local governments and/or corporations. With the piece facing a Veterans Administration building, the museum (with or without Deitch) decided to buff over the […]

Preview: Martin Wittfooth – “Gardens” @ Roq La Rue Gallery

This Friday, December 10th, Martin Wittfooth will be bringing a new body of work entitled Gardens to the Roq la Rue Gallery. Exhibiting alongside Mike Brown, Wittfooth paints his animalia from a different viewpoint – in a faded world where it seems the time of man has passed and all that is left are rusted monuments and infrastructure, the last vestiges of the human race. More preview images after the jump…

Preview: Mike Brown – “New Works” @ Roq La Rue Gallery

Opening this Friday, December 10th at Roq la Rue is Mike Brown’s joint show with Martin Wittfooth.  As you can see from the piece above, Failures of Perception, his colorful renderings of the natural world have become a little twisted. Take a look at some more preview images after the jump…

Teaser: “Dreams Deferred” @ Chinese American Museum

While the genocide of Native Americans, the enslavement of Africans, and the more recent agitation about illegal immigration is a familiar topic to many, what the Chinese in America have endured remains an unfamiliar subject to most. So little is taught about the discriminations the Chinese faced in the late 1800’s and early to mid 1900’s that sadly, many Chinese-Americans today don’t even know their own history. For example, did you know that the only law to exclude a certain race from the US was […]
