Teaser: Todd Schorr – “Designed for Extinction” @ Otis College of Art and Design

AM had the pleasure to visit with Todd Schorr (interviewed) last week in his studio as he was putting on the finishing touches for his upcoming show at Otis College of Art and Design at the end of this month (June 26th). The exhibition entitled “Designed for Extinction” will be similar to his highly successful show last year at the San Jose Museum of Art (covered) in the sense that it will be a retrospective. However, this time around, the works included will span the […]

Setup / Preview: Herakut @ Gallery Springmann.Varol

According to our friends at Galerie Springmann.Varol, the street art tandem of Hera and Akut are already on site setting up their new show opening June 11th. Not only will the exhibition feature fantastic paintings from  Herakut (interviewed), it looks as though there will be some exquisite sculptural work as well, bringing to life the creatures and imagery from their canvases. More pics after the jump…

Openings: LeBasse Projects (Culver City Artwalk)

The first stop of the Culver City Artwalk for AM was the group show at LeBasse Projects. Along with a strong lineup of gallery regulars, artists new to us such as Jean-Pierre Roy were featured during this annual event. His colorful paintings of imaginary landscapes drew us in with their dream-like vibrancy and fancy. More pics after the jump…

Streets: Vhils & JR in Los Angeles (Part II)

As you know, AM has been looking forward to seeing four great artists (Vhils, JR, Conor Harrington (interviewed), Micallef (interviewed) get together for a show at the Lazarides space in Beverly Hills (320 North Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210). “Eurotrash” opens on Wednesday, but JR and Vhils have already completed some murals downtown LA (Spring Street between 6th and 7th) for their fans to enjoy. Of particular interest is the collaboration piece between the two artists where Vhils goes over a photographic wheatpaste piece […]

Fame Fest ’10: Blu

Looks like Italian street sensation Blu has arrived in Grottaglia for this year’s Fame Festival. Like last year, the artist decided to take aim at some local political issues with this large mural. One of the issues of contention with residents of the small town are the special waste dumps that are being built there without their input or permission. This piece cleverly inserts some local imagery with the olive trees that are prevalent in the area and the signature ceramic dishes that are produced […]

Streets: Know Hope

We recently let you know about a collaboration mural that Know Hope put up with Conor Harrington (interviewed) in Israel. It looks like he also decided to get poetic with this piece in Tel Aviv. A closer look as well as another recent offering after the jump…

Culver City Artwalk ’10: “Picks of the Harvest” @ Thinkspace

On right now at the Culver City Arts District is their annual Artwalk. After bringing you a look at what LeBasse Projects and Carmichael Gallery had to offer, we now turn our eye on another great gallery – Thinkspace. Heading their show is master manipulator of pop culture and satirist, David MacDowell. You can’t help but smile when you see the skill in which David takes familiar elements and remixes them into a clever and unexpected composition – like Golem heading over to “Booger King” […]

Justin Richel Install @ Center for Maine Contemporary Art

The Center for Maine Contemporary Art recently opened their juried Biennial exhibition where the participating 41 artists were chosen from 654 entries. One of these distinguished artists was none other than painter and sculptor Justin Richel. We particularly enjoy his pieces that deal with the precarious balance of stacks and clusters of sweets, furniture, birds and whatever items he sees fit to throw into the mix. Along these lines, he recently release pictures of the large wall painting he installed for the CMCA entitled “Whirling […]

Opening tonight at the Copro Gallery will be “Rochambeau”, the new solo show from Tin (interviewed). He’ll be bringing a new body of work to the Santa Monica with a mix of beautiful women, guns, and stuffed animals, all painted in color pastels in his signature steam punk style. Discuss this show here. Discuss Tin here.

Update: Jeff Soto – “Life Cycle” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

AM stopped by yesterday to visit with Jeff Soto (interviewed) to find out more about his upcoming show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery later this month (June 26th). Although we are big fans of this work already, we were still very impressed by this new body of work, especially the level of detail and depth that Jeff decided to add to this new batch of paintings. We’ll be bringing you the full studio visit with some more teaser shots soon, but believe us when we say this […]
