Openings: Asia Top Gallery Hotel Art Fair (Hong Kong)

With stunning views of the Hong Kong harbor and skyline in the background, the third installment of the Asia Top Gallery Hotel Art Fair (a rather cumbersome name that surprisingly isn’t an acronym) opened last weekend at the Grand Hyatt. After successful exhibitions at the New Otani Hotel, Tokyo (2008), and the Grand Hyatt, Seoul (2009), the organizers naturally moved on to another major metropolitan – Hong Kong. Take a look at all the photos some familiar faces as well as some new talent after […]

Last we wrote about of filmaker and versatile artist David Lynch, he was collaborating with musical acts Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse on projects at Michael Kohn Gallery and with Danger Mouse again at Art Basel Week. For his most recent show which closed in December at the Griffin in Santa Monica, Lynch revisists his first love – painting – with a new body of work that was his first solo in Los Angeles in over a decade. Take a look at this video from DLF.TV […]

Showing: “Fresh” @ Thinkspace Gallery

When we visited Thinkspace a couple weeks ago to check out Damon Soule’s solo show, we also took in the “Fresh” group show in the project room. The appropriately named show featured some new young talent on the Silverlake gallery’s roster including Linnea Strid (seen above), Josie Morway, and Jacub Gagnon among others. Take a look at all the pics after the jump…

Streets: Below Las Vegas with Logan Hicks

Inspired by Matt O’Brien’s book “Beneath the Neon – Life and Death in the Las Vegas Tunnels”, Logan Hicks (interviewed) recently took an interesting look at the massive system of drainage tunnels underneath the city of sin. Portions of the more than 300 miles of subterranean passageways are covered in graffiti and the feel of the place kind of reminds us of the underground work of Brazilian street artist Zezao. More pics after the jump.

Showing: Clare Rojas – “We They, We They” @ Ikon Gallery

Last time we saw Clare Rojas, she was showing with Lydia Fong (aka Barry McGee) and Andrew Jeffrey Wright at New Image Art. She currently has a show in the UK at the Ikon Gallery entitled “We They, We They” which will be running until the March 21st. Stop by if you are in the area as it looks like the “Mission School” artist has put together a pretty fantastic installation with her folk-inspired art including her signature painted banjos. More images after the jump…

Preview: Chris Peters @ Last Rites Gallery

Los Angeles based artist Chris Peters has a show opening this Saturday, March 6th at Last Rites Gallery in NYC. Peters’ paintings are full of symbolism, somber atmosphere, and strangely enough they elicit an emotional response from viewers even though his main characters are devoid of flesh and skin, but maybe that’s the point. Besides providing the nice preview images after the jump, Chris has also kindly agreed to mail a signed showcard to the first reader who can leave a comment telling us how […]

Matt Small (interviewed) and his friend Zac Walsh will be opening a show next week entitled “This is Us” at the Signal Gallery (interviewed) in London. Small will be bringing more of his signature paintings with his colorful marbleized technique based on photos he takes off the streets. We are not as familiar with Walsh’s work but will be looking forward to checking out his new body of work. Take a look at one of his pieces after the jump and plan attend on March […]

Openings: Yoskay Yamamoto – “Tell Me A Story” @ LeBasse Projects

Opening in the project room at LeBasse Projects along with Yoshitaka Amano’s show was an installation from Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed). Entitled “Tell Me A Story”, the hanging sculptures were reminiscent of the piece from his solo show last May. If you don’t have time to stop by personally to check it out like Yoskay is doing in the photo above, take a look at some photos after the jump…

Video: JR – “Women Are Heroes” (Paris)

Street photographer extraordinaire JR recently released a video chronicling one of his great projects, the Paris portion of his traveling show “Women Are Heroes” held during the Nuit Blanche festival (covered). In it, you can see varied response from the French people and media as well as some fabulous timelapse footage of the French artist and his crew relentlessly pasting up the banks of the Seine river.
