Releases: Joe Sorren – “The Overture” Print

Joe Sorren just announced a new print, “The Overture”, a giclee with an edition size of 95 that he has made available on his webstore. You may remember that this painting was for the BLAB! show last year. He did some pretty interesting documentation of the creative process for this piece previously which you can see here. Last week, important shows for two young artists, Mark Jenkins and Aakash Nihalani opened jointly at the Carmichael Gallery (their last show before moving to the new Culver City location). Mark Jenkins brought many of his classics indoors such as the paper tape carousel horse and faceless hooded mannequins. In addition, the gallery setting allowed him to remix and play a little with his repertoire like with his usual multi-limbed bodies formed into a side table. The “Who Killed The Music” benefit art show kicked off yesterday with a night of good art, music, and familiar faces all around. Tate Modern continues its “Tateshots” series with a video tour of their “Pop Life” show (covered). Their selection for the guest tour guide is none other than Jonathan Yeo, whose controversial portraits and artwork often utilize pornographic imagery. Jonathan gives us his unique take on some of the “erotic” elements of “Pop Life” from Jeff Koons to Andy Warhol. Discuss this show here.

AM stopped by for a visit with Travis Louie (interviewed) and Lola this morning as they were putting on the finishing touches to their customized blackberries before the private opening of the “Who Killed The Music” Grammy Show tonight. The cell phones will be displayed next to each artist’s painting with a winning design chosen at the end of the show to be put into production. Take a look at the duo in action after the jump…

Openings: London Art Fair

This year’s London Art Fair, held from January 13-17, attracted over 23,000 visitors and featured a wide variety of art to hold their attention. No matter how many art fairs we see or attend, we can never get enough of tremendous amount of paintings, sculptures, videos, installations, and other art on display – buffet style. After opening his solo in LA last October, Andreas von Chrzanowski aka case (part of the Ma’Claim crew) is set to open a solo show at the Signal Gallery (interviewed) in conjunction with Campbarbossa. As evidenced by the piece above, his photorealistic spray paint skills are off the charts. The show, “Never odd or eveN” opens on February 18th in London. Via Vandalog.

So… Pretty much all the speculations have been confirmed that Banksy indeed is premiering his documentary “Exit Through the Gift Shop” at the Sundance Film Festival. It’s always interesting to see how street artists adapt their art to fit into a gallery setting, especially when they are so non-conventional (even for street art) like Mark Jenkins and Aakash Nihalani.
