Shepard Fairey x Grammy Awards

Shepard Fairey (featured) has been selected to create the official artwork for this year’s GRAMMY Awards. The commissioned piece will grace the cover of the 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards program book, telecast tickets, promotional poster, and 2010 GRAMMY Nominees CD. Also, there is some chatter about another GRAMMY themed art show like the one curated by Kris Lewis (interviewed) last year (covered).  More details to follow… Discuss Shepard Fairey here.

Video: Brendan Monroe @ Richard Heller Gallery

For those that missed Brendan Monroe’s (interviewed) solo at Richard Heller Gallery last month (covered), you also missed out on a fantastic “constellation” installation. Fortunately for you, we recorded some footage of all the hanging sculptures for you to enjoy. As an added bonus, check out another video of the back room in the gallery space that included a sitting sculpture and wall installation after the jump…

Preview: Femke Hiemstra & Junko Mizuno @ Roq La Rue

Opening next weekend simultaneously are Femke Hiemstra’s “Hello Dachshund” and Junko Mizuno’s “Desert Woman.” Dutch artist Hiemstra’s creative use of found objects and fantastical narrative (animate inanimate objects frolicking with mischievous creatures in dark fairytale settings) has always drawn our attention and it will be nice to see a new body of work from her. Another artist we enjoy, Mizuno will bring her alluring and mystic girls and her special “gothic-kawaii” aesthetic from Japan to Seattle with a new series of paintings (seen after the […]

Basel Week Miami ’09: Mark Ryden

One of the highlights of our trip to Miami was definitely seeing this new Mark Ryden piece revealed at the Paul Kasmin Gallery booth at Art Basel. The breathtaking 72″ x 48″ piece “Incarnation” seems to be a happy medium between his new minimalistic style seen at his last solo at Tomio Koyama in Japan and his older imagery.  Sold for almost 900K, it appears the market for one of the top artists in the so-called “low brow” movement is still strong. Take a look […]

Openings: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Art Asia

Showing adjacent to the SCOPE, the Art Asia opened its doors to fair-goers exposing the Art Basel crowd to the special flavor of their region’s art. Featuring art from countries such as Korea, China, Japan, India, Cambodia, Thailand, and Taiwan, the work definitely brought some fresh ideas with its Asian flair. More images after the jump…

Video: Souther Salazar Interview

Scion ART has sent over a video interview with Souther Salazar for us to share with our readers. If you remember, the self portrait themed traveling Scion Installation 5 exhibition included a fantastic piece from Souther, which he discusses in the video among other things.  Make sure you stop by the Giant Robot Biennale 2 exhibition if you have chance to check out Souther’s huge immersive painting and awe-inspiring installation if you haven’t yet. Discuss Souther Salazar here.

Basel Week Miami ’09: Jeff Soto – Primary Flight Mural

There are so many artists getting up at Basel Week Miami this year that it’s hard to keep up with everything. On our list today was Jeff Soto’s (interviewed) mural for Primary Flight. The almost completed piece, although different, is reminiscent of a mural he did in London during his show at StolenSpace in May. In fact, Soto tells us that doing some street work in the UK (the first time in 10 years) started him itching for more outdoor displays of his art like […]

Video: Art Basel x Vernissage TV

If you enjoyed our first look at Art Basel a couple days ago, you’ll also like this video overview from Vernissage TV. The footage gives a idea as the feel, atmosphere, and cross section of attendees and art from the main fair this year. Look for more from AM as we focus in on specific artists and booths in our upcoming coverage… Discuss Art Basel here.

Basel Week Miami ’09: Barry McGee – Wynwood Walls Mural

After opening his epic show last month at PRISM, Barry McGee moved on to Art Basel for his next project. For his Wynwood Walls installation, McGee covered an entire building with his signature geometric patterns, left plenty of tags, trademark imagery, and threw in an overturned car as well, smoke machine and all.  AM spent some time salivating over the details on the site all the while documenting everything to share with you! More images after the jump…

Openings: Basel Week Miami ’09 – “Stages” Exhibition

AM stopped by “Stages” last night on the final leg of its journey.  One of the hottest shows of Art Basel Week opened with many of the artists in attendance including Jose Parla, KAWS, Shepard Fairey (featured), D-zine, Futura, Rossom Crowe, Os Gemeos, Tom Sachs, and Eric White (seen above with his mother – a cancer survivor). The paintings will be auctioned off to benefit LIVESTRONG and the fight against cancer. More pics after the jump…
