Openings: Dan McCarthy – “Dear Science” @ Gallery 1988 – Venice

Last weekend, the Venice location for Gallery 1988 presented a whole new body work from Dan McCarthy (interviewed). Dear Science is the New England-based artist’s third solo with the gallery (see 2010 and 2011) and featured a series of originals as well as limited edition offerings. Known for his vibrant renderings of different times of day including dawn and dusk where the color and lighting can be quite stunning, McCarthy’s work documenting the great outdoors brings on a feeling of quite reflection when viewing the paintings. Releases: Aron Wiesenfeld – “David” Etching

Tomorrow, July 14th (noon PST), Aron Wiesenfeld will be releasing a limited edition etching on his webstore. David will be produced in a run of 45 (with 5 AP’s), sized at 18.5 x 15″, and will cost collectors who want to add it to their collection $295. Openings: Yayoi Kusama Retrospective @ The Whitney Museum

A couple nights ago, AM was able to stop by the Whitney Museum in New York to attend the opening of the Yayoi Kusama solo exhibition. The traveling retrospective, which was recently shown at the Tate Modern in London (covered), features a diverse selection of her work from the 1940s through the present including traditional Japanese paintings, her canvases utilizing repeating motifs of dots and nets, furniture bristling with soft-sculpture phalluses, her polka-dot-painted pumpkins, whole room light installations, and more. After a couple of false starts, AM finally got to see Karin Krommes‘ latest solo exhibition entitled Reign at Waterhouse & Dodd in London. Her beautifully layered paintings in oil and acrylic feature portraits of aircraft parts from discarded and abandoned planes. The principal series of Reign are four diptych presentations of ejector seats from fighter jets, rendered in so much beautiful detail that they feel almost as three-dimensional as the installation piece within the gallery of a Martin-Baker Mk2 housing a tree-filled landscape arrangement. Continuing the collaboration between two galleries on opposite coasts, this Saturday night (July 14th) sees the opening of Go West at the Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles. The exhibition, which will be curated by Joshua Liner Gallery, is a followup to the Go East exhibition that was hosted at their New York showspace last May which was curated by Mark Moore. This Saturday, July 14th, the Yokohama Museum of Art will be opening Yoshitomo Nara’s newest show a bit like you and me…, 11 years since the Japanese artist’s last solo there in 2001. The title of the exhibition is taken from a song by the Beatles, Nowhereman, expressing the relationship between the artist and his works and between his works and the viewer, as mentioned in the artist statement. Releases: Gregory Euclide – “Laid Down & Wiped Away” Print Set

The David B. Smith Gallery and artist Gregory Euclide recently released a series of prints from his Laid Down & Wiped Away project. Euclide teaches high school in Minnesota and during his twenty-five minute lunch periods began creating temporary paintings within that short allotted time frame as a demonstration to his students and an aesthetic challenge.
