Art Focus: Willy Verginer

For your Memorial Day Weekend perusal, we have this week’s Art Focus on sculptor Willy Verginer. The intricate works from the Italian artist are carved usually from a single piece of wood featuring people interacting with inanimate objects or animals in some interesting positions. Often the pieces are accented by ornate floral elements or segmented colors lending them a sense of whimsy. Via Beautiful Decay.  Photos via Galerie Majke Husstege & Arch|dez|art. Showing: Ron Mueck @ Hauser & Wirth, London (Savile Row, South Gallery)

If you remember, we previewed the Ron Mueck exhibition at Hauser & Wirth, London (Saville Row, South Gallery) last month. Those familiar with Mueck’s hyperrealist style and playful distortions of scale will know his work needs to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. The four-sculpture show closes on Saturday 26 May, so the terribly busy, the forgetful and the procrastinators still have a couple of days to check it out. Favourite pieces for AM are Still Life, a giant plucked chicken hanging by […]

Update: Dalek

Judging from this new ink piece from James Marshal aka Dalek (interviewed), he hasn’t completely killed off his space monkeys yet. Of course, his more abstract work also continues with an update of a mural he painted at the Hobie Surf Shop in Corona Del Mar, a completely new piece really. For those who still haven’t gotten enough after perusing the in-progress pics below, you can check out a video of the creation of the mural here. Discuss Dalek here.

This is part of the Tambourine Project in which artists and celebrities (which includes Ricky Gervais, Raymond Briggs, Helen Mirren, Stephen Fry, Eric Clapton and Log Roper) were asked to doodle on the instrument and have them auctioned off on Ebay (listings can be seen: here). The exhibition […]

Mars-1 x David Choong Lee, Damon Soule, & Oliver Vernon – “Symbiosis Eclipse” Painting

Apparently, the staff at AM were not the only ones squinting their eyes trying to catch a glimpse of the solar eclipse several days ago. Members of the Furtherrr Collective, Mars-1, Damon Soule, and Oliver Vernon, who only recently collaborated on a large mural in Arizona (covered) got together for round two – this time welcoming another painter in the crew to participate as well – David Choong Lee. The symbiotic piece, which was completed at Pyramid Lake, looks like if was inspired by the […]

Mike Stilkey (interviewed) has just finished a 42 foot long installation at Downtown LA’s mural hotspot outside The Standard hotel and gave us a little background to the piece: ‘A homeless guy came by and told me he hadn’t seen anything like this since the zoo drop. I asked him what the zoo drop was and he said it was when all those planes and helicopters dropped animals out of the sky. Hence the title of the piece just had to be The Zoo Drop.’ Stilkey […]
