Openings: Charming Baker – “Stupid has a new Hero” @ New York Studio Gallery

AM was on hand to experience the private opening of Charming Baker’s latest show “Stupid has a new Hero” at New York Studio Gallery (previewed). The pop up show welcomed a slew of friends and fans of London-based artist’s clever yet abrasive paintings. Charming and crew rolled out the red carpet for all to enjoy the special night by making sure everyone walked away with something in their hand; he even set up a cool hand silkscreen station where people could make their own prints […]

Preview: “Movers & Shakers II” @ Ronin Gallery

Thinkspace gallery made a move into Culver City last month, and as one gallery leaves to take a step up, another moves in to fill it’s boots. Relocating from Echo Park, The Ronin Gallery now occupies the popular Silverlake spot, and after a few modifications to the space, opened it’s inaugural group show “NEX GEN” last month. This month sees Ronin bringing in the talent with another grouping of new contemporary artists in “Movers & Shakers II”, the follow up to last year’s LA event […]

As one of the cornerstones of the Pop Art movement, Roy Lichtenstein left behind a legacy of phenomenal art that has influence much of the art, design, and marketing that surrounds us today. The Gagosian Gallery in NYC (555 West 24th street location) is currently showing a collection of his works entitled “Still Lifes” with works spanning from 1972 to the early 1980’s and focusing on paintings, sculptures and drawings. This is a show that both young and old will find very rewarding in person. […]

Studio Visits: Tom French

Tom French is a young artist whose work we’ve been enjoying for a little while. A regular contributor to group shows in and around London and the UK, we saw Tom’s fantastic “Cowboy Balance” series of works available at Urban Angel recently and got in touch to go take a look at his work for ourselves at his studio up in Newcastle, UK. Tom works predominantly in charcoal, but also uses acrylic, spraypaint, gold leafing and collaged paper to bring his dazzling urban realism compositions […]

Openings: Yoshitomo Nara – “Ceramic Works” @ Tomio Koyama Gallery

Yoshitomo Nara unveiled a new series of works at Japan’s Tomio Koyama Gallery yesterday. As we mentioned earlier, Nara has been very busy honing his talents on this new medium for over a year at Shigaraki Ceramic Cultural Park. The results of his hard work clearly showed in his 20 or so ceramic sculptures both large and small in scale. Of course, what would a Nara show be without some of his signature drawings. It’s very exciting when an artist explore a new medium outside […]

Colorful masks or faces stare back at you with geometric shapes and colors forming fascinating environments. Check it out after the jump.
