Showing: Mark Schoening – “Cloudcookooland” @ Blythe Projects

Los Angeles gallery, Blythe Projects, currently holding it’s inaugural Culver City show, featured an artist that drew AM’s attention, whose work we’ve actually been enjoying for the last year or so. “Cloudcookooland” is the first solo show in LA for Mark Schoening (featured on this month’s cover of American Contemporary Art magazine) since he moved to the city from New York last year. Schoening’s explosive work captures frozen moments in time, and this new show is inspired & informed by his recent relocation. He describes […]

Our friend Oliver Vernon is set to open a new group of works at Denver’s David B Smith Gallery. This latest series of works takes the viewer on another psychedelic journey through Oli’s various abstract dimensions, colors and shapes. Some last minute notice on our part, but a definite must see as the show opens tonight. Check out our preview of this rad show after the jump.

LAzarides 90210 heats up Los Angeles this summer

Remember last year when we broke the news about Lazarides moving their famous Outsiders show to LA? Well, they decided to step up their pop-up show efforts by expanding their LA presence to 4 shows that will last through this summer. The still secret 8000 ft gallery space will be situated in the famous high end district of Beverly Hills. The line up is nothing short of spectacular with David Choe (featured) to kick off with an opening April 23rd, followed by JR, Vhils, Conor Harrington, and Antony Micallef […]

Studio Visits: Mars-1

Earlier this week, AM had the pleasure of visiting the San Francisco studio of artist Mars-1 as he was putting the finishing touches on his latest pieces, debuting this weekend (teased).  The new body of work features a few of Mario’s newer (stylistically speaking) black and white pieces, as well as a massive canvas showcasing his signature transcendental style. While hanging out in his Lower Haight studio we also got the chance to check out his excellent collection of vintage and contemporary vinyl toys and […]

Preview: Marco Zamora & Derek Albeck – “The Fool” @ Fecal Face Dot Gallery

The work of Los Angeles based artist Marco Zamora caught our eye recently as we noticed his show at Derek Albeck was opening soon. His imagery of urban landscapes and the people that inhabit it are done monochromatically with interspersed splashes of color, leading to a nice contrast. The show opens tonight, April 1st, at the Fecal Face Dot Gallery in SF so we look forward to seeing how this body of work turns out. Some additional preview images after the jump…

Preview: Showcase Series: San Francisco Group Exhibiton for LeBasse Projects

You may remember us posting some photos from Melissa Haslam’s studio a while back.  If you recall, the pieces seen were for the LeBasse Projects SF showcase pop-up show (opening tomorrow) including some gallery stalwarts along with Haslam like Yoskay Yamamoto (featured), Edwin Ushiro (interviewed), Andrew Hem (interviewed), Alexandros Vasmoulakis, Nate Frizzell (featured) along with some interesting additions – Herakut (interviewed) and Seonna Hong! See more preview pics of the gallery setup as well as details of the exhibition after the jump.

Anish Kapoor Designs London’s Olympic Tower

Every year we visit a major art fair like Art Basel, we notice certain artists always create buzzworthy pieces. One of those artists is Anish Kapoor, who is renown for creating impressive eye catching sculptures. Apparently we aren’t his only fans as Anish was just named the winner of the competition to design the new “Olympic Tower” for the upcoming 2012 Olympic Games in London. The structure seems to be a mix of a roller coaster and the Eiffel Tower coming to life. The mind-blowing […]

Recommended openings for this coming weekend (April 1st – April 4th)

As spring kicks into gear this month, the shows are pouring forth like April showers. So many good shows, hard to single out just one, but some of those that are foremost on our radar include the big grand re-opening of the new and improved La Luz De Jesus Gallery out in the Silver Lake/Los Feliz area of Los Angeles where the recently shuttered BSFA in Culver City is getting folded back into the legendary La Luz space. So now there will be two nice […]

Streets: Shepard Fairey x Obey – Mural Call Out

You’ve seen the previews of Shepard Fairey’s coming May Day exhibition at Deitch, but do you know the drill? Shep has an exhibition and the host city gets a free urban beautification makeover courtesy of iconic murals from the Obey crew, much like the ones built in Boston, Venice, Austin, Pittsburgh, and DC. But, this time he’s doing a little homework and this is your chance to get in on some “audience participation.” The crew is putting a call out for mural sites in Manhattan, Brooklyn […]

Damien Hirst is heading up the centenary celebration for the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco with his latest “Cornucopia” exhibition. Much like his recent Gagosian Gallery show in NYC (covered), this installment will feature 60 works that span the major points of his illustrious career. From butterflies, medicinal cabinets, spot & spin paintings, and formaldehyde glass tanks, museum goers in the exclusive city of Monaco will be able to experience the brand of art only the YBA artist can produce. The show opens up April 2nd. Image […]
