Openings: Gert and Uwe Tobias – The Breeder, Athens

AM was in Athens, Greece, and stopped into The Breeder to check out the latest show by Romanian-born twins Gert and Uwe Tobias. We first became aware of the brothers a few years back after happening upon a show of theirs at a gallery in Los Angeles’ Chinatown, where we were instantly taken by their dark yet playful works on paper. Since then, they have done quite well to say the least, exhibiting at MoMA, as well as at prestigious galleries around the world.

Creative Process: Tristram Lansdowne

Just ahead of his solo show at LE Gallery entitled “Entropical Paradise” (previewed with studio visit), AM brings you a glimpse of how Tristram Lansdowne typically puts together one of his pieces. We asked Tristram if he would record some details of his artistic process for us – he did just that, and you can see the stages of one of his paintings coming together along with a some words from the artist after the jump.

Releases: Jose Parla – New Prints

Fans of Jose Parla’s urban calligraphy have three more reasons to be happy as word came out this week of three limited edition prints that will be released next month at Elms Lester. The London gallery will be holding a special event on December 5th to commemorate the release of the giclees (with over-layering of Parla’s trademark, free-flowing calligraphic markings using multiple hand printed silk-screens). All three will be editions of 100 and priced from £750 – £850. Images after the jump…

Preview: Basel Week Miami ’09 – “Stages” @ O.H.W.O.W. Gallery

After it’s start in France in July, “Stages” will make its final stop before the paintings going to the homes of collectors (purchased to benefit LIVESTRONG).  The exhibition will be on location at this year’s Art Basel Miami at O.H.W.O.W. Gallery (Dec 4 – Dec 6) and like the show’s recent stop in NY, several artists were added to the traveling exhibition – this time, the Clayton Brothers (featured), Erik Parker, and Tomoo Gokita (currently showing at Honor Fraser). Take a look at the Parker […]

Teasers: Art Basel Week Miami ’09 – Wynwood Walls x Deitch

Deitch Projects has assembled an astounding roster of artists – including Aiko, Shepard Fairey (featured), Barry McGee, Os Gemeos and Swoon (interviewed) – to participate in its Art Basel Miami ’09 Wynwood Walls project. According to the press release, a major property owners in Miami’s Wynwood art district has made available a group of walls and buildings on which the artists can create murals. The project also includes an indoor space where paintings by several of the artists and documentary photographs by Martha Cooper (interviewed) […]

Preview: Sashie Masakatsu – “De Facto Standard” @ Mizuma Gallery

Masakatsu Sashie is preparing to show back at his home country of Japan at Mizuma Galley after a recent show in LA. Opening this Saturday, November 26th, the show will run until the day after Christmas. We expect his signature urban orbs floating over ominous landscapes, but as the title of the show also hints at, Sashie is not merely content with having his art meet some arbitrary “De Facto Standard.” He seeks to push his talents to another level. This latest body of work also […]

Openings: Will Barras – “Darling We’re Leaving” @ FIFTY24SF

Will Barras’ nearly sold out show, “Darling We’re Leaving” at FIFTY24SF will be closing later this week. AM had the opportunity to visit the artist during the install (though it was more of a week-long live painting session) as Will effortlessly crafted his narrative, weaving it between the walls and the wooden canvases, smoothly expressing a fluid stream of consciousness and spontaneous storytelling full of lust, compassion, fear and longing. Barras, being the overall nice guy that he is, set this show at very attractive […]

Preview: Damien Hirst – “Nothing Matters” @ White Cube

Damien Hirst continues his attempt to paint as well as Rembrandt (easy according to him) with a solo show tonight at White Cube (both Hoxton Square and Mason’s Yard locations) in London. Barely a month after his opening at the Wallace Collection (in fact, show there continues until the end of January), the formaldehyde king returns with 19 new paintings. This body of work is heavy with omens and foreshadowings of death including crows, blood splatters, skeletal forms, skulls and empty chairs among other things […]

Influential American artist, Raymond Pettibon will be opening a exhibition tonight in London at Sadie Coles HQ. Included in the show will be a series of new drawings along with a number of seminal pieces from the 1980’s. Definitely take time to attend this show if you are in the UK and also look for more coverage of Pettibon’s show coming up at World Class Boxing at this year’s Art Basel Miami. Another image after the jump…

Preview: Basel Week Miami ’09 – Team Gallery x Ryan McGinley

After having been featured by Team Gallery at Art Basel Switzerland, the gallery is bringing Ryan McGinley’s newest works to Art Basel Miami.  The photographs being shown at the fair continues his Moonmilk series (remember his show at Alison Jacques Gallery?) and also includes some images from his most recent road trip.  The settings involve locations deep beneath the earth’s surface and now some on or above it.  They integrate the nude body into scenes of nature, almost blending them into one. More images and […]
