Upcoming: Ryan McGinley – “YEARBOOK” @ La Térmica

On November 19th, Ryan McGinley will be opening another iteration of his YEARBOOK project at La Térmica in Malaga, Spain. Consisting of studio portraits of over two hundred nude models, the display of these photos are usually in installation form, this time impressively adhered to all of the cultural center’s walls in their showspace. Heading into the final days (thru November 11th) at the The Goss-Michael Foundation is Instincts from Jose Parla, the inaugural exhibition at the new smaller and more focused space on Wycliff Ave in Dallas. The new site-specific pieces from the Cuban-American artist are richly textured, heavily influenced (as is his practice) by the gritty and decaying walls on the streets with layers and layers of calligraphic gestures. Utilizing intense colors and free flowing script, the paintings and sculptures speak to the Brooklyn-based artist’s “creative instinct,” the overarching theme of the new body of work. […]

Eighteen in Copenhagen, a new space by V1 Gallery, is currently showing 29 Flags, a solo exhibition/installation by Cali Thornhill DeWitt. The exhibition opened on October 13th and will stay on view until October 14th. DeWitt’s new body of work consists of 29 vintage Stars & Stripes with flock lettering reflecting on the infamous moments that marked the last few decades of American life. Recap: Clare Rojas – The Inexhaustible Middle” @ Alice Gallery

Alice Gallery in Brussels recently had a solo from Clare Rojas on display entitled The Inexhaustible Middle. Continuing her move to abstraction and color study, the new works from the American artist distill her folk art-like imagery into patterns, geometric shapes, and linear forms in her distinctive palette. Along with presenting her latest works on canvas and paper, Rojas also performed songs in her “folk-bluegrass” style under the pseudonym of singer-songwriter Peggy Honeywell. Photos via Juxtapoz. Showing: Jamian Juliano-Villani – “The World’s Greatest Planet on Earth” @ Studio Voltaire

Lat month, Studio Voltaire in London opened an exhibition from Jamian Juliano-Villani entitled The World’s Greatest Planet on Earth. For her first solo outside the United States at a public institution, the New York-based artist prepared a series of her painted collages featuring appropriated images, personal photographs, and reproductions of existing artworks, reinterpreted into surreal amalgamations with a touch of dark humor. Along with these paintings, some never before exhibited sculptural installations rounded out the show that will be on view until December 11th. Photos via Studio Voltaire. Last night, Jacob Lewis Gallery held the opening reception for their inaugural show with Hajime Sorayama. A few weeks after announcing his representation, the Chelsea-based gallery revealed his newest body of work featuring his signature Sexy Robots. The 10 new acrylic paintings and one sculpture were created around the idea of re-inventing American icons.
