Releases: Clayton Brothers – “Caught Being Good” Book & “Floret” Print Set

We’ve received some pretty interesting news from the Clayton Brothers, who recently had a show at Patrick Painter (covered) – a limited edition release that includes both a publication “Caught Being Good” and a hand finished giclee entitled “Floret” all enclosed in a slick Lucite box. Check out all the details here as well as take a look at some additional pics after the jump…

Behind the Scenes: Scott Musgrove Bronzes

Here’s a first look at a pretty exciting project Scott Musgrove is working on with the Metalphysic Studio bronze foundry in Arizona. Look at these massive clay sculpts for what appear to be two pretty large-scale sculptures. Not sure when these be ready but maybe for his May 2010 show at Jonathan Levine? One can only hope. More images after the jump.

Highlights: Recommended Openings For September 17-23

After the onslaught of openings across the globe last weekend, things have calmed down a bit. Leading the charge this week is the second year of the FAME Festival in Italy. If you’ve been following our coverage of the show thus far, you already know it is by far the place to be this weekend and as always, keep it locked on AM for coverage of the opening night events. Check out the full details for the FAME Festival and all the other shows going off […]

Openings: Mark Dean Veca – “As Cold As They Come” @ Jonathan LeVine Gallery

Continuing with our coverage of Jonathan LeVine Gallery’s massive kick off of the new art season, AM brings you Mark Dean Veca’s “As Cold As They Come.” This psychedelic body of work continues where his last show “Paintings, Wall Drawings, and Collaborations” left off (covered/interviewed). At the center is “Popeyeconography,” which is a series based on the classic Popeye cartoon. It was great to see Brutus, Olive Oyl, Wimpy and Swee’ Pea redone under Mark’s surreal biomorphic style. He even had time to sneak in […]

Openings: Edwin Ushiro – “Softly Encompassing the Womb” @ LeBasse Projects

Something about LeBasse Projects’ new space brings out the best in its stable of artists. With Tessar Lo and Yoskay Yamamoto’s (interviewed) taking it up another level (here & here), Edwin Ushiro could not help but elevate his game for his solo that opened last weekend, “Softly Encompassing the Womb.”  With a body of work inspired by childhood ghost stories he heard growing up in Hawaii, Ushiro impressed the crowd with the meaningful and personal work as well as dazzled eyes with his new vibrant […]

Openings: Camille Rose Garcia – “The Hydra of Babylon” @ Merry Karnowsky Gallery

Our little art world celebrated one of its brightest stars last night when Camille Rose Garcia opened her show “The Hydra of Babylon” (setup) at Merry Karnowsky Gallery. Fans, collectors, artists and well-wishers turned out in droves to take in the Los Angeles based surrealist artist’s paintings, embellished drawings, murals, plushes and some nice little jar pieces. Garcia’s latest body of work explored the ideas of ecological collapse and human catastrophe along with the healing power of nature. Her bold new colors mixed with her […]

Preview: Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary Art Auction

Fifteen years is a long time. For a magazine & brand that pioneered coverage of art that nobody else wanted to cover, Juxtapoz has come a long way. Humble websites like ours probably would not be around if not for their efforts to expose our generation to artists who otherwise would not have gotten any publicity. So imagine what a treasure trove of works they will be able to come up with for a 15th Anniversary Auction. We are salivating just thinking about it. The […]

Teaser: SHAG – “Autumn’s Come Undone” @ Corey Helford Gallery

Looks like SHAG (interviewed) will be channeling some Hieronymus Bosch for his solo show at Corey Helford in November.  The exhibiton entitled “Autumn’s Come Undone” will be his first at the Culver City gallery and will presumably have some pieces paying tribute to the famous 15th century painter.  Another image after the jump…

Trailers after the jump.

Openings: “Neighborhoods SF” @ 111 Minna

This past Labor Day Weekend, a couple friends from out of town visited AM here in SF.  As it was their first time in the city (and on the West Coast!), they wanted to get acquainted with the true San Francisco experience; from the head shops on Haight to the seedy underbelly of the Tenderloin.  Well, with gas prices climbing back up, we opted for the easier SF tour – we visited the “Neighborhoods” show that opened this past weekend at 111 Minna (previewed). More […]
