Preview: Saturday @ Phillips NYC

Last night, Phillips De Pury in New York City held a special preview of the lots from their Saturday sale coming up this weekend. AM loves Saturday @ Phillips because of its increased accessibility compared with other higher-end contemporary auctions, which are typically held on mid-week afternoons and evenings, making them difficult for most working people to attend. In addition, Phillips Saturday sales are known for a wide range of items, including a great selection of urban, street and other emerging art, as well as […]

Releases: Bronze Pollard – Tim Biskup

Tim Biskup has been teasing his collectors with new images of his 7″ Bronze Pollard on his blog.  We like the new faceted look which mirrors the evolution of style in his paintings.  The figure will be produced with an edition of 44 and will be stamped and initialed on the feet. With his previous bronze release, the 2″ Iki, costing about $300, fans had better start saving now for the June release. More images after the jump.

Souther Salazar – “Above the Influence” Video – Family Guy Parody

Remember the “Above the Influence” anti-drug ad (seen below) done by artist Souther Salazar a while back. Well, after many amateur parodies done by netizens (some NSFW), popular TV show Family Guy has stepped in with their own version a couple days ago (seen above at the 7:31 mark). An obvious statement, but as the art of our generation gets more mainstream and advertisers realize the power of being in touch with our demographic, we will see more and more references (ie: parody of Shepard […]

Preview: Ron English – “Lazarus Rising” @ Elms Lester

After hanging with Ron English at Dr. Sketchy’s, he invited AM over to his Jersey City studio to check out his upcoming solo show at Elms Lester. The show entitled “Lazarus Rising” is Ron’s first ever UK solo and is his second with Elms Lester. The show opens to the general public May 8th and will run through June 6th. If you’re in London during that time, you should definitely check this one out. Keep your eyes peeled as we’ll post the full studio visit […]

Art Tattoos: Audrey Kawasaki

Art tattoos have always been fascinating to us because it requires a truly hardcore art collector or fan to permanently affix an image to their skin. It’s an interesting completion of a circle as we return to one of this art movement’s roots – tattoo art. The movement has evolved so much to include so many different artists, that the term “low brow” is controversial now, but we can agree that the beginnings, by definition, included artists not respected by mainstream collectors and institutions, one […]

World Tour: Gary Baseman & Toby in Israel – Jerusalem Meat and Jesus’ Lamb

We stopped by our friend Gary Basman’s (interviewed) studio this week to chat and take a look on his preparations for his upcoming show  “Le Noche de La Fusion” at Corey Helford Gallery.  We were amazed by all the work and planning that will be going into making this one of the biggest art parties of the year, but more on that later. If you remember, Gary had a show in Israel this past January.  As per his usual custom, he brought along Toby to […]

Openings: Draw @ Shooting Gallery SF

The mother of all drawing shows opened last weekend at the Shooting Gallery in San Francisco.  Featuring drawings from over 400 artists, the DRAW show is definitely one of the largest of its kind featuring artists we are all familiar with.  The exhibition started in 2006 at Fuse Gallery in NY, then to SXSW in 2007, and last year it was held at StolenSpace in London.  Make sure you stop by for a look if you are in the bay area but if you aren’t, […]

Teaser: Mark Brown – “The Lost MacGuffin” @ Gallery 1988 LA

Here is a little teaser image for Mark Brown’s show coming up at the end of this month.  As a promising emerging artist, we are pleased to see him get his first solo show, entitled “The Lost MacGuffin,” opening April 28th at Gallery 1988 (LA).  Expect the usual cast of characters thrown together in complex and frenetic combinations with a touch of symbolism. Hear a little about this painting as well as the show in the artist’s own words after the jump…

Openings: Tessar Lo – “Future Perfect” & Eric Fortune – “Lost in Light” @ LeBasse Projects

Tessar Lo made his solo exhibition debut this past Saturday with “Future Perfect” (previewed) at LeBasse Projects. Lo certainly impressed with this latest series of dream-like paintings which represents his exploration of “independence and hope for my personal history. Accepting my humanity is to understand that my existence partially relies on others. Though I’d want to know what it’s like to not rely on, need or respond to anyone but myself, no man is an island.” The show also features a notable installation from Lo […]

Openings: Brandi Milne – “Run Rabbit, Run” @ Thinkspace Gallery

Brandi Milne’s “Run Rabbit, Run” (previewed) opened this past Friday, April 10th at Thinkspace Gallery. There was a very unique, fun-filled vibe to this show. Those who attended the exhibition opening were treated to a wonderful new series of work and the chance to participate in Brandi’s “Easter Egg Hunt”. Throughout most of the night, plastic easter egg hunt eggs were placed in random places inside and outside of Thinkspace gallery. More photos after the jump…
