“Muses,” a group show at Black Maria Gallery is set to open on February 7th with some promising emerging artists – Tin (interviewed), Jeremiah Ketner (interviewed), and Kendra Binney. Contest: Sam Flores Painting Giveaway

To celebrate Upper Playground’s 10th Anniversary, Sam Flores has decided to give away a large painting (6 x 4 feet) to one lucky fan. The medium is acrylic and spray paint on wood framed canvas. Preview/Interviews: Craola @ Fifty24SF

Greg Simkins, or as he is popularly known, Craola (something he kept from his graffiti days) is opening his first show of 2009 at Fifty24SF on February 5th. His show “Seeing Things” (teased) expands on the pseudo still life format he has been working on, and the fact there is something alive in the arrangement that makes you take a second look. Preview/Interviews: Brandt Peters @ G1988 LA

Brandt Peter’s show “Cackle Factory” (teased) opens next week on Tuesday, February 3rd at Gallery 1988 LA. Ryden x Nagi Noda

Although the fashion line was released a while back, we only recently saw the amazing ads for “Broken Label” – a collaboration between Mark Ryden and the late Japanese designer Nagi Noda. This line was sold through Colette in Paris and featured Ryden’s well known imagery. Openings: 15 Years of New Image Art

Last night’s opening for “15 Years of New Image Art” (previewed here and here) reaffirmed why New Image Art is one of the primary driving forces in the alternative/low-brow/street art scene. The show was everything we thought it would be and more – great art, an energetic crowd, and non-stop entertainment. We got a chance to check out Gallery 1988’s (LA) Beastie Boys tribute show “Under the Influence,” and what a trip down memory lane! Almost 100 different artists created interpretations of their favorite “Beastie” moments from: Sabotage to Intergalactic, Brass Monkey to Sure Shot, Shake Your Rump to No Sleep Til’ Brooklyn, just to name a few. Tonight marks the opening of New Image Art’s anniversary show “15 Years of New Image Art” (previewed). AM swung by the gallery yesterday to check out the progress of the installation.
