Andy Warhol’s Eight Elvises Sells for $100 million

One month after Andy Warhol‘s 200 One Dollar Bills sells for $43.8 million at auction, The Economist has reported that his Eight Elvises painting sold privately for $100 million– a number that only Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock, Willem De Kooning and Gustav Klimt has achieved for a single sale.  It is a unique piece and measures 12 feet. With one of the most vibrant markets of any artist, Warhol continues to be as relevant as he’s ever been.  This particular painting merges the most popular […]

A Road Map to Art Basel Week Miami 2009

Here’s a condensed road map of the main fairs we’ll be hitting up as well as a breakdown of all the special events worth checking out while in Miami below. This is by no means a full listing of all the fairs or special events, but these are the main events happening that feature artists and galleries from our movement. There will be much to discover out of sheer happenstance once in Miami. Look for the AM crew at every turn, as we’ll be out […]

Preview: Art Basel Week Miami ’09 – Mark Moore x Kenichi Yokono

Los Angeles’ Mark Moore Gallery sent us a few preview images of works by Japanese artist Kenichi Yokono that will be shown at their booth at Pulse Miami 09. Yokono’s graphic and often grotesque woodblocks – which are carved and painted, but not printed – garnered him invitations to several of Takashi Murakami’s early Geisai fairs, but it wasn’t until Yokono’s self-sponsored installation at Pulse NYC 06 that he started getting attention outside of Japan. Since then, Yokono has shown several times with Mark Moore […]

World Tour: Japan with Nick Walker

It’s been a while since our last “World Tour” feature from Japan (here), so naturally, we were excited that Nick Walker (interviewed) dropped in on the land of the rising sun to do a little “street work” for his Japanese fans. Following up on his infamous “The Morning After” series (here and here), he visited locations in Tokyo and Osaka to do some “hits” with some long time favorites along with some new creations. In addition, he also participated in a live painting session where he […]

Openings: HK Venture (Part I) – Ashley Wood

Well-known Australian comic book artist and illustrator Ashley Wood recently headlined a group show in Hong Kong. Our HK correspondent Andy Li was on hand to take some pics of the “HK Venture” also featuring toys and figures from Threezero, Kenny Wong, Colan Ho, and Mak Siu Fung. The other Aussie artist in the show was Jeremy Geddes, whose works we were quite taken with (pics saved for Part II post) Images all after the jump…

Update: Allison Sommers

Allison Sommers (interviewed) recently completed one of her delightful little sculptures of the mischievous creatures from her paintings – “Little Diedrich.” She writes – “A meat cake, a sheet cake filled with hammy treats cake… so could be heard the siren-song of little Diedrich, waiting in the woods for an unsuspecting traveler to sample his gaily-frosted, heavenly-delicious confectionaries…” Look for more sculptures and paintings in her next solo show at Thinkspace in May of 2010. More views of Deidrich after the jump…
