Preview/Interviews: Jeff Soto – “The Inland Empire” @ Stolenspace (London)

Jeff Soto makes his United Kingdom debut this week with his solo show entitled “The Inland Empire” (teased) opening Thursday, May 14th, at Stolenspace. AM caught up with Soto ahead of the show to try and understand how the show came together, the symbolism and meaning behind his new work and how fatherhood has changed his career as an artist. Ben EINE, the street artist best known for his massive lettering across shop fronts and walls throughout the United Kingdom, presented his “Shutter Font” exhibition last week with Nelly Duff. The show was a behind the scenes look into the various stages of EINE’s pieces and also served to document his world record attempt, with EINE slated to hand-pull a seventy-seven color screen print across an edition of 150 pieces, resulting in 11,550 individual hand-pulls to complete all the works. AM stopped by for an early look at the new limited edition Jeff Soto will be releasing named “Inland Empire” – a 5 color hand-pulled screen print.Â Soto’s similarily named show “Inland Empire” (teased) is set to open this weekend at StolenSpace. Hailing from the land down under, Melissa Haslam (interviewed) made her first trip to Los Angeles for her show â€œWild Fieldsâ€ (previewed) which opened this past weekend at LeBasse Projects. Drawing inspiration from the world around her, Haslam presents her viewers with what she understands best: striking female characters against the backdrop of local Aussie flora and fauna mixed with just the right splash of color. Good idea and great execution. That’s the impression we walked away with at Mark Brown’s debut solo show at Gallery 1988 (LA). The beautiful paintings in “The Lost MacGuffin” are actually linked in a cohesive and fluid storyline. Starting off from one end of the gallery to the other, the audience will see the story unfolding in each painting. The vaults under Waterloo Station have been taken over by artistic director Kevin Spacey and his team from the Old Vic Theatre for their latest venture: Tunnel 228.Â A very cool “pop up” art show and theatre experience that seems to have come out of nowhere. “Hello and Goodbye” (featured) the latest body of work from Yoskay Yamamoto (interviewed) opened this past Saturday at LeBasse Projects. The show featured some of Yamamoto’s largest paintings to date and the level of detail and techniques employed by Yoskay for these new pieces clearly show his artistic growth since his last solo. AM stopped by Billy Shire Fine Arts to catch Mars-1’s latest show. Hot off his last show “Nuclear Mystics” at Jonathan LeVine Gallery, Mars-1 continued his direction of creating larger pieces that capture the grand-scale feeling his imagery evokes.
