Gary Baseman and Corey Helford Gallery pulled out all the stops for last night’s Carnivale-style extravaganza celebrating “La Noche de la Fusion” (covered), Baseman’s solo return to Los Angeles in over two years. Featuring Baseman-designed costumes come to life, carnival games, a fire bowl to burn away your fears and insecurities, an animation reel exploring Toby’s Travels and the Enlightened Chou, as well as eye-candy as far as the eyes could see, this was certainly an event to remember. Corey Helford Gallery held a very special collector’s preview of Gary Basemanâ€™s latest exhibition “La Noche de la Fusion.” The amazing “Enlightened Chou” installation was more impressive, once assembled, than when we previewed it inÂ our studio visit. The installation is comprised of many Chous, each one is from a different country: Thailand, India, Mexico, Brazil, Russia. If you took our earlier suggestion to add yourself to Naoto Hattori’s mailing list, you would have seen this painting in the recent batch of mini-paintings he released.Â Although Hattori is usually recognized for his paintings of psychedelic influenced figments of his imagination, there is a softer side to his work – hauntingly beautiful females often painted in this statuesque texture. New Image Art opens their â€œOcto Pussesâ€ group exhibition this Saturday, May 2nd. The show includes a nice variety of up-and-comers and established names, featuring the work ofÂ Aaron Johnson, Antonio Diaz, Ben Jones, Cleon Peterson, Gino Perez, Judith Supine (studio visit) and Neck Face. Taking over the gallery’s project room with “Horse Radish”Â is Bast (studio visit), who makes his return to the gallery with aÂ series based on horse jockey collages. Stencil sensations Logan Hicks and Broken Crow (Mike Fitzsimmons & John Grider) took some time do an interview with AM for their upcoming “drive-by” show “Broken Horse.” The much anticipatedÂ urban stencilÂ show will be held inÂ an awesome venue that was once the Hamilton Savings & Loan in Brooklyn, opening tomorrow, May 1st, from 7-11pm.
