Charity: “Artist Help Japan” Art Auction

Christina Conway, who if you remember curated the kokeshi show (covered), has again put her curatorial skills to work – this time to benefit the Japan relief efforts. Artists like Audrey Kawasaki, Yoskay Yamamoto, Jeni Yang, Allison Sommers and many more were asked to paint “Emas” – small wooden tablets left at Japanese shrines, usually with an image on one side and a handwritten wish or prayer on the other. These small pieces of art were then put up for auction here, where your bids […]

Streets / Teaser: ROA – “New Works” @ White Walls

Take a look at this complex piece from ROA from back in February at Unit44 entitled The Four Horses Of The Apocalypse.  The mural was painted for the White Walls project in Newcastle which is a coincidence because the Belgium-based artist will be opening a show this Saturday night, April 9th, at the White Walls gallery in San Francisco. This sweet stack of animals and skeletons was the first time the prolific street artist has incorporated color into one of his walls, so it will […]

Previews: ‘Family Shirt’ @ Krets, Malmö. Curated by Matthew Feyld

Matthew Feyld seems to be a regular on flights between Canada and Sweden of late. After two solo exhibitions and a residency at Krets in Malmö, and a solo and residency at Neon in Brösarp last year, Feyld is taking on the curation of the forthcoming group exhibition at Krets – Family Shirt. The exhibition opens on April 9th, and is to feature a selection of Canadian artists across the mediums of painting, drawing, sculpture and sound. Openings: Patrick Martinez – “Hustlemania” @ Known Gallery

Patrick Martinez recently opened his newest series of works entitled Hustlemania at LA’s Known Gallery. Patrick draws our attention to the everyday things that most may not think is conventionally beautiful. Using his environment as inspiration, he often focuses on the phenomenology of his surroundings to peak the interest of his audience. Exhibiting in the heart of Los Angeles’ Fairfax district, it looks like Patrick figured out a way to meld the hustle and flow from the City of Angels with the gallery world of […]

Showing: Gabriel Orozco @ Tate Modern

The Gabriel Orozco exhibition at London’s Tate Modern has been on since mid-January. AM is a fan of both the artist and this diverse yet cohesive show, curated by Jessica Morgan and Iria Candela. We’ve already been to visit three times. The works and installations, often consisting of common and familiar objects that have been altered or simply recontextualised, combine playfulness, subtlety and wit. It’s a thought-provoking display, one that we see as an exploration and celebration of beauty — beauty in symmetry, simplicity, the […]

Openings: Adam Wallacavage – “Dreamhome Heartaches” @ Corey Helford

It looks like last month’s opening of Adam Wallacavage’s (interviewed) show at Corey Helford Gallery attracted many of the city’s artistic community. Obviously enamored by his chandeliers, lamps, and other adventurous lighting options, the audience packed into the Culver City show space to take in his and Henry Lewis‘ new body of work. Take a look at some of the pics after the jump. Today is also the last day of the show so stop by if you haven’t had the chance to yet.

Streets: D*Face (Los Angeles) – Part I

We stopped by Culver City today to check out the near complete mural D*Face (featured) is painting on the side of the Corey Helford Gallery, site of his new show, Going Nowhere Fast, opening this Saturday night.  As you can see, D is exploring melding his imagery with elements of Lichtenstein’s work, which we also saw in our earlier studio visit. We will certainly be looking forward to seeing more of this fresh new direction at the opening and you can also expect more coverage […]

Opening Thursday, April 7th at Bold Hype Gallery, Quentin vs. Coen will serve as the first installment of their “versus” series, incorporating over 100 artists from the New Contemporary […]

Video: Tim Barber Interview with Camerabag.tv

Focal point of OHWOW’s hugely successful, and immensely compelling, exhibition last fall, Untitled Photographs (covered), Tim Barber recently sat down with Camerabag.tv for a insightful interview. Shedding some light on his background and inspiration, the New York-based photographer spoke about how his parents served as the impetus for his interest in photography, his fond memories traveling the world with good friend Ryan McGinley, the historical origins of the tinyvices online gallery he founded, and his affinity for rudimentary point and shoot cameras over expensive DSLRs […]
