Streets: Eric Haze x Standard Hotel (Los Angeles)

NY graf legend Eric Haze recently flew out to Los Angeles to participate in the MOCA’s Art in the Streets exhibition, but being the busy bee he always is, he also took some time to put up some street work in the City of Angels. Working with the Standard Hotel he painted this great mural outside of the downtown location. Haze sent us these pictures of him creating this beast which measured 40 x 6 feet. This isn’t the first time he’s worked with the […]

Outdoor/Streets: “Street a.k.a. Museum” @ Portsmouth Museum of Art – New Hampshire

In yet another example of street art and graffiti’s acceptance and proliferation in fine art institutions across America, the Portsmouth Museum of Art hosts Street a.k.a. Museum, curated by LeBasse Projects’ Beau LeBasse. The exhibition, which opened on May 11 and runs until Sept. 11 features familiar names: Bumblebee, Herakut (fresh off their beautification of Los Angeles), Shark Toof, Alexandros Vasmoulakis, and Andreas von Chrzanowski. The showing is the second part of a two part exhibition, the first of which was in LA featuring the […]

Streets / Teaser: Invader – “1000” @ Galerie Le Feuvre (Paris)

MOCA’s indoor space (covered), along with the surrounding outdoor landscape (covered), was infiltrated by Invader’s mosaic minions for Art in the Streets. Apparently, his street invasion, while technically unsanctioned, was so egregious that he was bestowed the unwelcome honor as the first artist to be arrested – though later released and allowed to leave the country – by Los Angeles Police. The LAPD have made their opposition and misplaced animosity regarding the museum exhibit crystal clear, as if on some tireless terrorist hunt wasting resources […]

Focus: Street Market – Barry McGee, Steve Powers, Todd James – “Art in the Streets” @ MOCA

As part of the MoCA’s Art in the Streets exhibition (covered), Todd James (aka REAS), Barry McGee (aka Ray Fong, Lydia Fong, Robert Pimple, Twist) and Steve Powers (aka ESPO) reunited to re-envision their legendary 2000 Street Market installation at Deitch Projects, which itself was a recreation of the trio’s Indelible Market at the Philadelphia ICA earlier that year. Although the installation is always different, the idea remains the same: an urban environment—complete with stores, streets and all—that reflects the artists’ idea of a hyper-real […]

Interviews: Kenny Scharf @ Levis Film Workshop – “Meet the Artists” series (MOCA)

Last Sunday, AM attended the screening and Q+A for Kenny Scharf: More, Newer, Better, Nower, Funner, as part of a series of short films at the Levis Film Workshop, each based on an artist in the Art in the Streets exhibition. The footage includes Scharf on day and night time spray painting excursions, as well the creation of his installation for the historic MOCA show. The short film is directed by Nathan Meier and Kenny’s daughter, Malia Scharf, who are collaborating on a feature length documentary […]

Openings: “Street Cred” @ Pasadena Museum of California Art

Last night in Pasadena, the art and influence of graffiti in Los Angeles was on full display as Street Cred at the Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA) opened its doors to a group of artists ranging in genres from letter-based legends like SABER, RISK, and RETNA (who also painted the facade of the museum), to so called post-graffiti abstract expressionism by painters like Augustine Kofie (whose mural with El Mac was put up in conjunction with the show) and Push, to fine artists such […]

Streets: Augustine Kofie & El Mac (Los Angeles)

As we mentioned in our article documenting RETNA (featured) painting the side of the Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA), tonight marks the opening of Street Cred, an exhibition featuring a LA-centric roster of graffiti and street artists (as well as fine artists who have street influences in their past). In conjunction with the show, Augustine Kofie and El Mac have recently collaborated on this mural for the 33third Store / Mid-City Arts. A number of other artists from the exhibition will also be blessing […]

Streets: Gaia (Baltimore)

Back on the streets in preparation for an upcoming group show Succession, Gaia has gone big with his largest unsanctioned piece to date. After going nuts in Chicago with an impressive visual assault on the streets during his time in the Midwest for his solo in March (covered), he undoubtedly felt compelled to bring it proper now that he was back in his home turf of Baltimore. As the artist conveys, “the most massive illegal piece of my life on Edgar Allan Poe”, now fittingly […]

Auctions: “Under The Influence” @ Phillips de Pury

A little while back, on our day excursion to catch the Will Ryman installation in Manhattan’s Midtown district, we also stopped by Phillips de Pury & Company’s Under The Influence auction (previewed). Held at PDP’s flagship space, this great sale gave us a diverse assortment of top notch artists. A sampling of the roster included Kehinde Wiley, Faile, Ryan McGinley, Joe Bradley, Yoshitomo Nara, Dash Snow, Amie Dicke, Damien Hirst, Lamar Peterson, Dzine, and Mr. One of the interesting things about this event was the […]
