Publications: Roger Gastman – “Tools Of Criminal Mischief”

Our friend Roger Gastman has been a busy boy. First he was the consulting producer for Exit Through the Gift Shop, then he curated the Sanrio anniversary art show, and later in 2011, he’ll be helping the MOCA to curate their Art in the Streets exhibition. Somehow, he still found a way to squeeze some time in to write a new book on graffiti. Bringing together street art stories from current day to all the way back in the 1940’s, it’s definitely one to grab […]

It seems like Arkitip has been involved in some pretty cool projects recently including the Andrew Schoultz show at their space in LA and the recent Jose Parla x Incase releases. Word now comes that the next issue (No. 0056) of their comprehensive art magazine will focus on French street photographer and TED prize winner – JR.  The edition will be limited to 1000, consist of 128 pages, and even more exciting, be packaged with two 5 x 7 In. Preview: “Urban Osmosis” @ Lopo and Space Gallery

It’s been a wonderful run for Spoke Art at Lopo Gallery, but just like 2010, it must come to an end.  Coincidentally, the opening of this final show will be on the ultimate day of the year.  Now-veteran curator Ken Harman presents a show featuring immersive site-specific installations, in three separate rooms, from new and established street and fine art artists.  They include Eddie Colla, Kelly Towles, D Young V, GATS, and the prolific Shark Toof. Ring in your new year surrounded by art and […]

Videos: El Mac – “Chelsea Jewel”

Remember in October when we showed you the mural El Mac gifted New York when he was in town for his show at Joshua Liner Gallery (covered) with Damon Soule? We now have a video for you that was edited by his girlfriend Kim that documents nicely some of that amazing spray technique he uses to create his signature look.  Enjoy! Discuss El Mac here.

Openings: “Never Judge” @ StolenSpace Gallery

Never Judge, a group show where a diverse group of artists were invited to reinterpret their favorite book covers, opened recently at the StolenSpace Gallery in London. Classics like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, 1984, War of the Worlds, and Beauty and the Beast had their covers redone by artists like Art Under Pressure, Shepard Fairey, Eelus, and Will Barras. See these and more after the jump with photos courtesy of Street Art London and Unusual Image.

Openings: “Postermat” @ The Hole Gallery

AM recently attended The Hole Gallery’s latest show Postermat. The group exhibition was a little different than the typical group show because they went all retro with it. Imagine going back to your childhood and rummaging through mall shops for your favorite posters of sports, rockbands, singers or even comic books – almost everyone had a cheap but cool poster that was maybe mass produced, but meant the world to us. In the same spirit, the good folks at the Hole and Levi’s, got together […]

Streets: Olek (New York)

Agata Oleksiak or simply known has Olek has come into prominence recently for her crocheted interventions on the streets.  Although more commonly known for her bikes, the “Crochet Guerrilla” recently created a “sweater” for the famed Charging Bull or “Wallstreet Bull” in New York. Interestingly enough, the sculptor, Arturo Di Modica, originally installed the bull (costing the artist $360,000 of his own money) without permission in front of the New York Stock Exchange in December 1989 so this new work is somewhat of a homage […]

Osgemeos – “Slava’s Head” for The Moulin / Dépayz’arts

It looks like Osgemeos has hooked up with The Moulin again for another project, this time to fashion Slava’s head out of a trailer. The character is taken of the famous Russian clown show – Slava’s SnowShow, which is also the subject of an animation that the Brazilian duo are working on (shown here previously).  The installation will be part of a project called “Dépayz’arts“, held between Dec 27th-31st, with some of the best theater, dance, music, installation and street theatre groups including of course, […]

Openings: “Law of the Jungle” @ Lehmann Maupin

When AM came back from our adventures during Basel Week down in warm Miami, we were greeted back in New York by freezing temperatures. Fortunately, “the twins” made a trip back with us back to the Big Apple. We caught the opening night at Lehmann Maupin Gallery where a great group show curated by Tiago Carneiro da Cunha was on display. The show’s central theme was “survival of the fittest” and featured Efrain Almeida, Caetano de Almeida, Ashley Bickerton, Joshua Callaghan, Marcos Chaves, Saint Clair Cemin, […]

Teaser: David Choe for “Zen Garden” @ JANM

This upcoming Thursday night at the Japanese American National Museum, the Zen Garage exhibition, developed in collaboration between the JANM and Giant Robot’s Eric Nakamura (interviewed), will be open to fans of car culture and art alike. The show features The Super Famicom Car – a retro video game inspired by a converted Scion xB that utilizes projectors from both the front and rear to play video games, Spike – a custom motorcycle by Shinya Kimura, and David Choe’s (featured) custom Monster Scion xB including […]
