Second Helpings: May 2010

Spring is finally behind us and we look forward to a summer with blazing art. But for now, let’s look back to a significant May with another edition of Second Helpings where we bring you some of our favorite stories from the past month. Get served after the jump.

Openings: LeBasse Projects (Culver City Artwalk)

The first stop of the Culver City Artwalk for AM was the group show at LeBasse Projects. Along with a strong lineup of gallery regulars, artists new to us such as Jean-Pierre Roy were featured during this annual event. His colorful paintings of imaginary landscapes drew us in with their dream-like vibrancy and fancy. More pics after the jump…

Streets: Vhils & JR in Los Angeles (Part II)

As you know, AM has been looking forward to seeing four great artists (Vhils, JR, Conor Harrington (interviewed), Micallef (interviewed) get together for a show at the Lazarides space in Beverly Hills (320 North Beverly Drive, Beverly Hills, CA 90210). “Eurotrash” opens on Wednesday, but JR and Vhils have already completed some murals downtown LA (Spring Street between 6th and 7th) for their fans to enjoy. Of particular interest is the collaboration piece between the two artists where Vhils goes over a photographic wheatpaste piece […]

Fame Fest ’10: Blu

Looks like Italian street sensation Blu has arrived in Grottaglia for this year’s Fame Festival. Like last year, the artist decided to take aim at some local political issues with this large mural. One of the issues of contention with residents of the small town are the special waste dumps that are being built there without their input or permission. This piece cleverly inserts some local imagery with the olive trees that are prevalent in the area and the signature ceramic dishes that are produced […]

Overtime: May 30 – June 5

Skulls from owl pellets made into art by Alastair Mackie. More evidence of Annie Leibovitz’s poor financial judgment. Conceptual artist and designer Tobias Wong has passed away. Studio visits with Jonathan Yeo and Ian Francis. Popular galleries closing in Boston and Seattle. YBA’s are sell outs? Mark Ryden paints Mr. Lincoln. An interview with Dan May. New work from Zilda, Sam3, Jen Stark, James Jean, and Aiko. Judge in Shepard Fairey vs. AP copyright dispute over Obama image urges settlement, saying AP likely will win […]

Streets: Know Hope

We recently let you know about a collaboration mural that Know Hope put up with Conor Harrington (interviewed) in Israel. It looks like he also decided to get poetic with this piece in Tel Aviv. A closer look as well as another recent offering after the jump…

Openings: “The New Grand Tour” @ Bryce Wolkowitz

Last night, AM attended the opening of “The New Grand Tour” at the fresh gallery space of Bryce Wolkowitz (previewed). With a lineup of Deanne Cheuk, Jose Parla, Rey Parla, Davi Russo, Romon Kimin Yang (Rostarr) and Suitman a.k.a. Young Kim, it was not hard to see why the Chelsea space was packed to the brim with art lovers. Many industry peers such as Ryan McGinness, KAWS, Eric Haze, Sandra Gering, Cristina Grajales and Akino Kondoh were also in attendance. One of our favorite pieces was a supersized […]

Streets: Ron English in Italy

It looks like pop art master, Ron English (featured), has been hard at work in Italy working on some murals. Here we see him painting his classic “Guernica” remix in Rome, but this time with a skeletal twist. He also hit up Milan with a Elvis double-vision piece (seen after the jump).

Highlights: Recommended openings (June 3rd – June 6th)

June has begun and with it an onslaught of shows across the globe. Leading the charge this week, due to the sheer breadth of shows, is Los Angeles. The massive Culver City Art Walk takes places this Saturday with many of the galleries doing special group shows for this event and if you still have it in you after trekking about Culver City there are huge shows from the likes of, Mike Stilkey (interviewed), Skullphone and a showing of later works from Andy Warhol at the […]
