Releases: Supakitch – “Supamoto” @ Pigment Editions

Dropping 1pm Eastern today at Pigment Editions is a sick new print by our Gallic homeboy Supakitch. The 18 x 24″ print, entitled “Supamoto,” is no giclee, ink-jet, rolled-out in mass quantities. Instead,  it’s truly a love-labored collaboration between artist and master printer – using only the best homemade archival inks on nice thick paper. And the run is tiny, with only 20 of the limited yellow version, and a mere 2 of the super-limited special blue version. Check out more pics, including details of […]

Video: Jean-Michel Basquiat – “The Radiant Child” Trailer

While we were in Miami for Art Basel last year, we heard whispers of a new documentary about Jean-Michel Basquiat entitled “The Radiant Child”.  We never did make it to the special screening, but the film official premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this year (also site of recent Banksy sightings) and now a trailer video has made itself available online. Directed and filmed by the infamous graffiti artist’s friend Tamra Davis before his untimely death in 1988, she was overcome with the sadness of […]

Highlights: Recommended openings for this Feb 24 – Mar 1

February rolls to a stop this weekend before the big NYC art machine cranks into high gear next week for the big Armory show and the surrounding satellite fairs. Look for a ton of on-the-scene coverage to come from Armory and all the surrounding fairs in the week ahead. Without doubt, the most anticipated show going off this weekend is the 5th Anniversary group show going down in NYC at Jonathan LeVine’s Chelsea digs. A who’s who of those that have passed through his gallery […]

Openings: Shepard Fairey – “Supply & Demand” @ Cincinnati Contemporary Art Center (Day 1)

As Shepard Fairey’s retrospective museum show “Supply and Demand” landed in Cincinnati this past week for the final stop of the tour, AM was on hand to take part in all of the opening festivities! The fun kicked off Thursday night at the Contemporary Art Center (CAC), where about 125 people were on hand for a very special evening of cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and dinner with Shepard and Amanda Fairey. The guests in attendance were treated to a very private sneak preview of the show. In attendance were members of […]

Openings: First night of Dash Gallery

Mogul Damon Dash has successfully navigated the world of media and fashion for years from his Manhattan home base. Now, he’s turning his focus on the world of art. Last weekend, AM was on hand for the private opening of the Dash Gallery in the heart New York’s storied Tribeca district. The premiere show, curated by Gabriel Fortoul, featured artists Isaac Fortoul, Bobby Castaneda, Heather Gargon, Hector Ruiz, and Jeremy Wagner. Some of hip hop culture’s finest were also in the house to experience the […]

Studio Visits: Steve Powers

When we were in Philly to check out Steve “ESPO ICY” Powers’ amazing “Love Letter” mural project (covered), we stopped by his center city headquarters to chat with the man himself and get a behind-the-scenes look at his work and creative process. Similar to Powers’ previous Coney Island studio opened in conjunction with Creative Time’s Dreamland Artists Club, his Philadelphia space is part studio, part working sign shop and part neighborhood hangout. With every wall covered with ephemera, art, jokes and junk, it’s clear that […]

Streets: Love Letter – Steve “ESPO ICY” Powers

We took the roadtrip down to the City of Brotherly Love to grab a cheesesteak (or two) and experience firsthand Steve Powers’ ambitious public art project entitled “Love Letter.” Powers (as ESPO ICY) and crew got back up on many of the same West Philadelphia rooftops that he used to hit back in the day, to paint dozens of murals on buildings along the Market Street elevated train line between 45th and 63rd streets.Together, the walls form a sentimental dialog between young lovers, but they […]

Teaser: Barnstormers @ Joshua Liner Gallery

Just recently, the Joshua Liner Gallery gave notice that they were revising their schedule to include an exciting surprise show opening March 18 by the NYC/Tokyo-based artist collective The Barnstormers. According to insider information leaked to AM from a reliable source, the collaborative group (which includes nearly everyone whose anyone in the street art and associated scene) will be creating individual pieces and site-specific installations that will likely span beyond the walls of Liner’s spacious Chelsea gallery into another gallery space in the building. This […]
