Openings: Barry McGee @ Biennale de Lyon

Barry McGee’s participation in the annual Biennale de Lyon was cause for excitement in the AM offices, especially after seeing some video footage.  Some photos surfaced this morning of the opening of the immersive installation Mr. Twist graced the French with (consisting of some new and old elements).  Looks like McGee went all out with tagged overturned vans, paintings, classic patterned pieces, just an overall aweseom exhibit. More pics after the jump…

The man once mentioned as “this generation’s Francis Bacon” is about to have a show and AM can’t wait! Last time, we saw “Ant” was at Outsiders NYC (covered) and his abstract goodness delighted the New York crowd. His latest solo “Becoming Animal” looks to be EPIC! Openings: Dain – “Copesetic” @ Brooklynite Gallery

“Copesetic” is the name of Dain’s first ever solo show at the Brooklynite Gallery. It means “fine and dandy,” a throwback term from the early 1940’s. When Brooklynite released the preview video for the show (here), it seemed hilarious and appropriate for the “old school” themed show. Little did we know that Rae and Hope of Brooklynite were going to literally transform the ENTIRE gallery into a replica New York “Speakeasy” complete with crystal chandeliers, floor to ceiling wall paper, and even transforming their outdoor […]

Video/Preview: Barry McGee @ Biennale de Lyon

This year’s Biennale de Lyon will be opening soon with the theme of “The Spectacle of Everyday.” Curated by SF based Hou Hanru, it’s not surprising that this year Barry McGee will be participating in the annual art event in Lyon, the second largest metropolitan area (behind Paris) in the heart of France (Sept 16th – Jan 3rd). Take a look at glimpses of McGee hard at work creating one of the fantastic installations he is famous for in the video above. Discuss Barry McGee […]

Openings: D*Face – “Ludovico Aversion Therapy/All Your Dreams Belong To Us” @ Jonathan LeVine

On Friday, AM had the pleasure of attending the private viewing of D*Face’s debut U.S. solo show at Jonathan LeVine Gallery. Following the sneak preview we got from interviewing him and visiting his studio in London, it was hard to sit still and wait for the curtains to come up to enjoy the full body of work and installations. Opening alongside of Mark Dean Veca (more on that later), there were plenty of peers in attendance – Kaws, Stash, Eric Haze, to name a few. […]

Preview: Juxtapoz 15th Anniversary Art Auction

Fifteen years is a long time. For a magazine & brand that pioneered coverage of art that nobody else wanted to cover, Juxtapoz has come a long way. Humble websites like ours probably would not be around if not for their efforts to expose our generation to artists who otherwise would not have gotten any publicity. So imagine what a treasure trove of works they will be able to come up with for a 15th Anniversary Auction. We are salivating just thinking about it. The […]

Fame Festival: Blu Time-Lapse

Remember that mural we told you about that Blu worked on at the Fame Festival several weeks ago? Well, there is a nice video out now that shows the time-lapse of him working the massive political statement. With the opening only a week away, we can’t wait to see all the finished street and gallery pieces from all the artists, but we are especially interested to see if the “graffiti-animation” Blu is working on can match the energy of “Muto.” Discuss Blu here. Discuss the FAME […]

Teaser: Shepard Fairey “Supply & Demand” @ Warhol Museum

A few weeks ago, the Boston ICA closed it’s doors on the record breaking “Supply & Demand” retrospective (covered) for Shepard Fairey. In case you missed the announcement here on AM, there still will be 2 more stops for this amazing show – first at the Warhol Museum (Pittsburgh) and then at the Lois & Richard Rosenthal Center for Contemporary Art (Cincinnati). So, the next stop is Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania – the home town of Andy Warhol and at none other than the Warhol Museum. In preparation […]
