Update: Sotheby’s Contemporary Day Sale Results

Yesterday’s Contemporary Day Sale (previewed) at Sotheby’s in London only had a few lots that AM was closely watching, but the results are a good sign for the overall market. In particular, Faile received a much needed boost with their large canvas “New York City 02” (Lot # 169) selling right in the middle of the estimate for 49,250 GBP and the smaller “NYC Butterfly Girl” on wood (Lot # 168) selling for 16,250 GBP, well over the 12,000 GBP high estimate. Faile has not […]

Streets: Mantis (not Banksy)

A couple days ago, we got news of a new Banksy mural up in “Old Street” London. Our first thought: makes sense, “Old Street” is one of his trademark spots to tag. But, something didn’t seem right. For example, it wasn’t signed by the Bristol bomber. Turns out it was the work of another UK artist – Mantis. Mantis’ clever use of the banana peels (ala Banksy’s “Pulp Fiction” previously at the same spot) had many fooled. Check out pics of this historic spot and […]

Releases: “Subway Art: 25th Anniversary” @ Black Rat Press

Last night, Black Rat Press held a very special signing with Martha Cooper, Henry Chalfant and Blade for the silver anniversary of “Subway Art.” Considered by many as the “bible” of the graffiti movement, this historic book documents and in many ways glamorizes the graffiti movement in the 80’s NYC street art scene. Os Gemeos are one of the many artists who attributed their start by the seeing works in this book. BRP had a limited edition run of 100 books that contained 2 signed photographs by […]

What’s with all the great limited edition releases recently? Here is David Choe holding up an epic print (his largest ever) of his Jimi Hendrix painting. Limited to 27 (also Hendrix’s age at death) and sized at 44″ x 51 5/8″, the print was priced at $600. Unfortunately, it already sold out before Choe even got the post up on his blog.

Their current show with C215 (covered) opened last week. Garlick shares the turning point that got the gallery started, the elements crucial to his success thus far and more, after the jump…

Preview: Invader – “Top 10” @ Jonathan Levine

We got a few more sneak peek images from the upcoming Invader “Top 10” show opening this Saturday at Jonathan Levine. The artist known to tile 80’s pop icons from Pac Man to his infamous Space Invaders across five continents is pulling out a new body of work that involves hundreds of Rubik’s Cubes forming each of his pixelized masterpieces (check out the process video we posted last week). The work featured above is actually designed to be read as “QR Code” by your camera phone and […]

Auctions: Sotheby’s Contemporary Day Auction (London)

This Friday, June 26th, Sotheby’s (London) will be holding their prestigious Contemporary Day Auction with some amazing works from the top of the Contemporary Art food chain. As one of the top auction houses in the world, we come to expect the usual suspects such as: Francis Bacon, David Hockney, Damien Hirst, Yue Minjun, Takashi Murakami, Zhang Xiaogang and Richard Prince. A pleasant trend we wanted to note is Sotheby’s inclusion of urban art notables such as Banksy, Faile and Ryan McGinness in this auction. It’s interesting to […]

AM got to tag along as these urban artists got together to create a show that was not only inside the gallery, but also along the back walls and alleys of some prime D.C. real estate.
