Best known for his thought-provoking mixed media pieces, inspiring poetry and intricate gallery installations, Know Hope is going big for his plans in the City of Angels. Know Hope will transform the gallery with a mix of paper raindrops, fishing twine and hundreds of sheets of cardboard so that patrons can literally step into one of his art pieces to interact with the space and life-sized cutouts of […]

Video: Scratching the Surface – Vhils

Portugal street artist Vhils, who recently participated at the grand opening of Laz’s Rathbone Place as well as the Tunnel 228 project, just released a video he’s been working one entitled “Scratching the Surface.”  In it, employing excellent cinematography, he documents the creation of one of his pieces.  We also get a glimpse at his mastery of all tools of the trade – spray paint, stencil, power tools, hammer and chisel. Openings: Grow Up @ Lazarides (Rathbone Place)

Steve Lazarides opened his new five-story gallery in London’s Rathbone Place this week (originally reported here). Collectors, admirers and famous faces alike crammed into the new Lazarides location, which has been named “The Rathbone.” AM was at the private view opening on Thursday the 14th and the house was packed. Even those on the invite-only guest list had to queue outside for a chance to get in and see the latest installment of the “Outsiders” show. Many of the artists, including Antony Micallef, Conor Harrington (interviewed) and […]

Openings: Art Hong Kong 2009 International Art Fair

Continuing AM’s tour of Hong Kong, we made a stop at the Art Hong Kong International Art Fair. This vanguard Asian fair brings together top notch exhibitors from over 110 galleries. Much like our visits to Basel Miami and Armory NYC, in Hong Kong we experienced and saw work from some of the best talents in the art world. It was exciting to have such a collection of premium artwork centralized in one place. Check out all our exclusive coverage after the jump.

Openings: Jose Parla – “Reading Through Seeing” @ Ooi Botos Gallery (Hong Kong)

Last night, AM was lucky enough to be on hand to experience Jose Parla’s latest body of work Reading Through Seeing (previewed) which opened in Hong Kong at Oos Botos Gallery. Parla’s much anticipated return to Asia didn’t disappoint as he produced a gorgeous body of work on a variety of mediums: canvas, wood, ceramic and paper. Parla blurs the line between contemporary and urban art through a hybrid technique derived from his signature calligraphic style and gritty street influence. Many of Parla’s pieces reflect […]

Streets: Jeff Soto in London (Part 1)

AM spent some more time with Jeff Soto (interviewed) as he was preparing for his upcoming solo at StolenSpace (previewed) this week. We were on hand to take pictures of the first of his street pieces in London. Soto was a graffiti writer back in the day around the Los Angeles and Riverside area before he concentrated on his endeavors in the studio and hadn’t taken to the streets in almost 10 years. Based on the quality of this piece, we certainly think he should get […]

Streets: Faile – Second Spinning Prayer Wheel Installation

Unperturbed by the theft of the first spinning prayer wheel (close-up feature) they placed in Williamsburg last month, Brooklyn based collective Faile have again installed another one of their beautiful, hand-carved prayer wheels in New York.  With these prayer wheels selling for upwards of $20k at Faile’s “Lost in Glimmering Shadows” (covered) show last year, this awesome street piece probably won’t last for long. Check out the video of the prayer wheel “spinning” as well detailed photos of the piece after the jump.

Street Art Shows Strong @ Sotheby’s Contemporary Day Auction

We heard a rumor that the economy is not well and the art market is hurting. Apparently, the folks attending Sotheby’s Contemporary Day auction don’t agree. Today’s sale yielded solid results, with 337 lots pulling in over 21.5 million USD. Among the amazing lineup of artists, such as Warhol, Basquiat, Kippenberger and Cy Twombly, AM noted the inclusion of two iconic names from the “Urban Art” genre: Shepard Fairey and Banksy. More after the jump…

Ben EINE, the street artist best known for his massive lettering across shop fronts and walls throughout the United Kingdom, presented his “Shutter Font” exhibition last week with Nelly Duff. The show was a behind the scenes look into the various stages of EINE’s pieces and also served to document his world record attempt, with EINE slated to hand-pull a seventy-seven color screen print across an edition of 150 pieces, resulting in 11,550 individual hand-pulls to complete all the works. Fans certainly appreciated the skill […]

Tunnel 228 Theatre x Art Show by Kevin Spacey

The vaults under Waterloo Station have been taken over by artistic director Kevin Spacey and his team from the Old Vic Theatre for their latest venture: Tunnel 228. A very cool “pop up” art show and theatre experience that seems to have come out of nowhere. Via a mysterious website which poses as a legit business, people can get free tickets to the event via a hidden link that allows the visitor to participate in the project. The show includes work by ATMA, Mark Jenkins, Antony […]
