Basel Week Miami ’09 – Dan Attoe @ Peres Projects

Less than a month after Dan Attoe‘s highly successful solo exhibition, I’m Done Worryin’ About Shit, at Peres Projects in Los Angeles came to a close, the gallery featured the artist in a solo show at Art Basel Miami. The show consisted of Attoe’s meticulously rendered paintings and large-scale, highly illuminated neon sculptures. It certainly was one of the most spectacular booths at Basel’s Art Nova section. AM had the opportunity to sit down with the recently transplanted Australian duo of Dabs and Myla – a couple of artists that we’ve had our eye on for a while. After witnessing David MacDowell’s wit and humor as well his acrylic skills firsthand at Thinkspace a short while back, we fast became fans of his work. But, his ballsy take on Robert Williams‘ classic “Appetite For Destruction” at the Crazy4Cult 3D show really blew our mind. The upcoming summer group show (teased/previewed) at Joshua Liner Gallery is packed with heavyweight artists with whom frequent AM readers will already be familiar, such as Dave Kinsey, Joe Sorren and Greg Simkins (interviewed). AM is a big fan of Alexandros Vasmoulakis.Â Although he currently resides in Berlin, the young Greek artist dominates the urban skyline of his hometown Athens with enormous murals on the city’s high rise buildings.Â We love the blend of street and pop surrealist qualities in Alexandros’ work and his sharp use of color to create a sensation of movement.Â The scale on which he works and his ability to incorporate his pieces into their environment is very impressive.
