Streets: D*Face (Los Angeles) – Part I

We stopped by Culver City today to check out the near complete mural D*Face (featured) is painting on the side of the Corey Helford Gallery, site of his new show, Going Nowhere Fast, opening this Saturday night. In preparation for his newest exhibition, which opened last weekend, Gaia went to town on The Windy City with his intricate animal centric wheat paste creations. With well over ten pieces located in various Chicago neighborhoods, the street artist has created a virtual playground for local art fans. Reminiscent of the fantastic JR x Vhils collaboration we witnessed in LA during the Eurotrash invasion last year, it looks like Vhils has busted out his tools again and has hooked up with another street artist for a project. Lisbon continues to be a hotbed for street activity recently (Brad Downey, Vhils), and it appears according to Stick2Target, a new piece from Conor Harrington’s (interviewed) has popped up. Haven’t seen any indoor work from the Cork born painter since the brilliant Hell’s Half Acre show (covered), so we are certainly curious as to what’s he been working on (mentioned here). Brian Adam Douglas, a.k.a. Elbow-Toe (interviewed) was in London a couple of weeks ago for his Due Date solo exhibition (covered), currently on at Black Rat Projects. Slow Your Roll, the first UK solo show by Brooklyn art duo Skewville, launched last Friday at High Roller Society. AM took advantage of the East London gallery’s new Sunday opening hours to visit over the weekend in the calm of a non-preview atmosphere. Whilst visiting Sheffield at the weekend, AM came across this new city centre piece from Phlegm. This cool sequential piece looks like it could have jumped straight out of the pages of the latest issue of his comic; and was painted over an older style colour Phlegm piece – the evidence of which can be seen seeping through the red background and also still partly intact top left of the shot. AM ventured over to the wilds of South Yorkshire this weekend to visit the studio of Kid Acne, who is currently putting together a new body of work for his upcoming solo show at StolenSpace entitled Rhythm is a Dancer. Claudio Ethos, whose surrealistic street mural in Paris we recently featured, has been busy doing more painting. The Brazilian artist certainly has a way of catching the eye with his play on proportions and his imaginative imagery. This new piece was done in his home country in its largest city – Sao Paolo. Berlin-based American artist, Brad Downey, has been keeping himself rather busy lately. His first show in the Middle East, We Are Beginning: Personal Projects in Public Spaces, opened this week at Cuadro Fine Art Gallery in Dubai. In addition, Downey’s work features in the group show What Is Contemporary Art? which opened Friday at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Roskilde, Denmark.
